I decided to clear up some issues I saw in someone else's thread. Without replying there to derail their topic.

I saw things like:
"Also don't go on food stamps, no one should unless they are totally incappable of working. As in medically incappable of holding a job."

This sounds like me...from college. I refused government assistance for years, even fighting with my parents over it because I believed in working to support myself. I am still fighting for better wages so I can get off unemployment due to my morals.

No, this is not how these programs work.
Yes you can get government assistance without being unemployed, unable to work or disabled.
You can retain your un-employment payments AND food stamps until your salary reaches a certain point. It could be due to disability, or it could be due to simple numbers crunching of the economy. If rent cost more then wages, what do you do?. Become homeless as a result of your morals , refusal to accept government monies and lose your job as a result?.
Have fun digging out of that "hole"...because once you are in poverty, it's even harder moving up.

Our government has decided in areas where the economy is bad, people get food stamps whether or not they are physically able to work.Someone could be able to work and not find a job or have to settle with a job that does not even pay rent....Should they be denied food stamps because of a bad economy?.

I work and I'm getting food stamps. In fact at the moment I am working three different jobs. I do not live in a luxury apartment as many know. I have a bedroom, a living room and a bathroom. I deal with a lot of ( _____) here and it gets very stressful at times.
People on disability do better then I do/.

Honestly if you were me and had food stamps, would you give them up over your morals?.
It's hard, but sometimes it's better to accept menial jobs that don't pay bills because of the way the economy is. I've had phases where I refused such jobs because they didn't pay basic living expenses and ended up being unemployed because there was no such higher paying job for my educational background and skills...is that better?.
I've been back to school multiple times and it hasn't helped.
Bottom line is if the economy is bad, you may just have to ride it out.

Yes, I know the system doesn't work....but until wages and the whole system is better, some of us have to make do.

Citizens are supposed to support a govt not the other way around. But I do agree that as many people as possible should get food stamps, welfare, etc. If enough strain is put on the system it will collapse under its own weight. I don't see any other way to stop this immoral redistribution that our govt engages in. Figured I'd get that in before the mods close down this political thread!

:iagree: this is what the whole program is for,..
they are stating the poverty level is 50 thousand dollars per year,.. i don't know anyone close that makes that,.. heck when my dad was raising us he barely made 30 and had 5 kids,.. and we only had meat 1 time a week,..
life isn't good but we make due,..he worked in the steel mills here,..
those job are done forever,....

we live in another world now,..

These services are provided by the government to assist people and keep our citizens from going hungry. If you truly need them, I say use them. There of course are plenty of people that abuse the system. Here in NC (at least my county) you cannot get food stamps unless you are a "family with children". My young adult son working a minimum wage job could sure use assistance at times especially medicaid, but it is not an option...sad. He is unable to afford insurance on his own.....

It is too difficult to make ends meet these days..........especially now that I know that with the salaries of hubby and I combined we still are at poverty level!
:thud:

hey, if you are in need then you have to do what you have to do to get by. If someone needs to get temporary help that's what it's there for. i don't see needing a hand up as a weakness or as something to be ashamed of. everyone goes through rough spots.

well, Let me give you another example, maybe from the other side.

I had my daughter, was a manager of a small dinner/ beer to go place, and was pregnant with my son.
I almost lost my son, spent many hours in the hospital, and was unable to work due to his health. I was capable of working. In fact, I wanted to work. I couldnt, because no day care would take my son with his health needs.

long story short, it took 5 years to get back to pay check to pay check surviving. so if you think, its easy to live off of welfare, think again.

I wasn't able to buy my kids christmas presents, I wasn't able to buy them school clothes,( even used) and many other things some people take for granted.

so what people saw, was a single mom with two kids, who wasn't working. They didn't know the whole story.
So, before you throw stones, don't asume most people like to live that way. I am sure they would like to have "no money" while using a credit card, which may be late in payments, but still gets paid. I am sure, they would be happy to decide if they could go on vacation, or if they should lease a new car. ect ect ect.

I had to decide if i should buy milk, or gas for my car. i had to decide if i shoud buy diapers, or pay for my sons prescriptions. I had to decide things no family should. thats why there are programs like this in place.

I hear so many people complaining how they have no money. yet they have savings. Imagine actually no money. ..not having enough gas to take your kids to school or even give them lunch money. Its hard. and people judging you because of what they see, and not what they know, doesn't help the matter.

It is my opinion that many have certain "luxuries" that could be given up instead of going on government assistance. Internet, cell phones, computers for example. My mother raised four children in a home that had NO running water and NO bathroom. She worked a job that paid 7 bucks an hour and still we were never on any type of government assistance, sure that was 25 years ago and things are more expensive now, however these types of programs are there for people who need a little assistance to get back on their feet, NOT for people to live lifetimes on.

The programs are there for people who need, who for one reason or another, CAN NOT, not WILL NOT, do it them selves. The programs are not there for people (and I have seen many) who would rather take assistance than do for themselves. I have been there at one time with 2 small children (one of which is special needs) a husband who was laid off and trying to find work in his field (flipping hamburgers in the mean time) and me working part time when he was home because we both couldn't work at the same time as day care was too expensive.

I don't think anyone here begrudges someone in need. I think most are just tired of the many who ride the system when they should be riding the bus to work.

Citizens are supposed to support a govt not the other way around
.
I noticed most of you live in the United States, and in the U.S, this is literally the ideal way the government should be ran , with no support for the "underdogs" and making it very hard for those under dogs to rise up and do something, get a great job etc. Hence, why I would never live in the United States, sorry but its multiple reason thing, HMOS, government not suposed to help citizens, rediculous med charges... I and alot of my friends probably would have died if we had been born in the states due to super expensive hospital charges, need of medication etc.
