Food stamps.

Yes, the topic, "Food Stamps." They exist because of poverty, class systems, nepotism, greed, corruption, etc.

And, actually, "Food Stamps" don't even exist anymore; so, perhaps there is no reason for a discussion at all!

My understanding is, at least in California, the recipients are now given a "Debit Card!" Go figure ...

Food stamps are also only given if you qualify for them. How much money you make vrs your rent and family size. I was on them for 2 years. I worked 2 jobs (16 hours days on 3 to 4 days a week) And after rent and bills, I had 150 left for me, my daughter and my mother (Bed Ridden from cancer, I take care of her) So I took the 200$ a month from food stamps gratefully. I didnt feel bad spending government money so my 2 year old daughter and dieing mother can eat. I would have robbed a store to feed them. I guess when it comes down to survival, I put my pride aside and do what I need to do, regardless what anyone thinks of me. and if you make too much money, at least in CA, they will deny your case, but when they see you need it like we did, why would I turn from help?

And just to clear it up, I had no cell phone, a 18 year old car, and the only "Luxuries" I had was a house phone, and a heater.

Sound reasonable to me. Indeed, I believe, with the average person, the government already takes 50% of your paycheck.

I say this because of "hidden taxes." The registration on your car, that is a hidden tax. Part of your cell phone is hidden taxes. The cost of your drivers license is a hidden tax (in that most don't even consider it a tax!) Your car insurance, a significant portion of that is a hidden tax. There are "federal excise tax" on the tires for your car, along with any sales, state and local taxes (all hidden in the "cost you actually see") are hidden taxes.

Readers Digest, years ago-don't know if they still do it, used to take a loaf of bread, figure all the taxes in water, land, fertilizer, pesticides/herbicides, transportation to mill/warehouse/store, etc., etc. I remember a .35 cent loaf of bread, way back then, would actually cost .05 cents if all the taxes, both seen and hidden, were removed. To say they are not just giving you your $200.00 bucks back is just kinda naive ... ROFLOL!

Anyone with enough interest should be able to investigate these for themselves. A lot of consumer groups used to keep data on all of this.

If you are having a hard time "swallowing" what I just stated, you ain't alone--I was when I researched it!

Way I figure it, we are already paying for Universal Health Care, we just ain't gettin' it!

And, once again, my irrelevant .02 worth ...

I agree that we are being overtaxed. Therefore, we should be taxed less. As far as universal health care . . . I think we are actually paying for universal sparkling water, we just aren't getting it! :screwy:

Apparently everyone has an opinion where everyone else's taxes should go.

Everything I have said, I believe to be true.

However, my real point is, with public education taking 1/2 of Californias' budget, I just can't get too upset over someone getting enough to eat--i.e., EBT card (food stamps.)

Before I would send one bag of rice overseas, I would make sure my fellow Americans were fed. Before I donated to WHO (World Health Organization) or provided any medical assistance to any other nation, I would make sure my fellow Americans were treated. Etc., etc.

Before punishing the poor for allowing good paying manufacturing jobs to go overseas (or, even help line operators to Canada, India, etc.), I would hand out food stamps--at least until, "Help Wanted" signs begin to appear in windows here in America, again.

Right now, my public servants in political office appear as "the drunken husband" who beats his wife and kids and spends all his money in the bar ... food stamps only helps "his conscience", a bit.

Yanno'?

The problem with food stamps is that before you know it, it's not just food stamps any more. It's shelter. It's medical services. It's public transportations. It's educations. It's vacation. It's entertainment. There is no stop to the demands of the people. And people don't demand it from the government, but they demand it from other people via the government.

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need", and these presumably basic needs forever expand.

Speaking on my own behalf, I am fine with being taxed to temporarely support the needs of those caught in a rough spot, but ONLY if there are severe punishments for those who even TRY to unfairly take advantage of the system.

Now on the totally separate issue of funds going overseas rather then staying here, I am just as disgusted as you are. It amounts to turning the back on your own people.

California is a big mess. The feds should be looking precisely at California and realize exactly what happens when you think high taxes is the key to success. I lived there and thank God I left.
