Hi everyone!! Im new here as u all can tell, been browsing for a while (lots of great info!) Anyway I picked up a few chiclids yesterday(2 Electric yellow, and 4 assorted african cichlids not sure of their names. I also have a two redtailed sharks, and a few other unknowns. Im trying to figure out what they are?? My question is I have some Tetra-min tropical flakes already,Is this ok to feed to all fish in my tank until its gone or do I need some special food for my Cichlids. Do you think they will be OK till its gone???? Thanx for any help!!!!

You need to find out what species you have since many african cichlids are vegetarian, and will perish if fed high protien foods. You should buy cichlid flakes or pellets for cichlids since its formula is better suited for them. Spiraluna is excellent for vegetarians. Do not feed tropical flake. Unfortuneatley you will have a difficult time feeding all the fish in your tank since they do not all have the same diet. You really should have researched before you bought.

I reccommend browsing the species profiles here: http://www.malawimayhem.com and tell us what species you have.

You really need to ID your other assort. africans before we can tell if that diet suits them. Some mbuna are vegetarians and should be fed a more veggie based diet. But there are other mbuna(like your labs) that are omnivores and will do ok with less veggies.

I wouldnt' recommend buying cichlid flakes becuaes most "cichlid" flakes are for CA/SA cichilds and are mostly meat based. You should look for spirulina flakes or a veggie pellet or a food based for africans(but even then they are sometimes still too high in bad protiens). I found nutrinfin max spirulina flakes and hakari excel to be good choices to feed herbivorous mbuna.

I narrowed down some of the names (I think?)
2- Electric Yellow Haps
2-Red Tailed Sharks
2-Auratus??
2-Red Topped Blue Zebras??
2- Some Variety of Pleko???
1- Still workin on???
Anyway I picked up some Ocean Nutrition Cichlid Omni Formula Hope this is better??
Im gonna set up another tank tomorrow Prob 30 gal how do you think i should separate them?? (they seem to be getting along OK but i dont wanna mess up their diets!) And your right I should have researched better :bowing: :bowing: !!!!! Thanx for all your help Gonna double check all my fish species!!!

I think what Kribs was suggesting is AFRICAN cichlid flakes and not general cichlid flake.

Anyways, this combined with spirulina would suit most africans...spirulina alone, I would not feed.

Out, of your list, only the yellow labs will do...the auratus are much too aggressive for the tank size and the other fish, the red tail black shark does not belong with africans and the red tops may work depending on tank size, 30 gallon MINIMUM. Plecos can work if the mbuna are not on the aggressive side.

It all depends on exactly what type of fish he has i guess.... i would not feed a lot of spiraluna if he had mainly haps and peacocks.

Looks like mostly mbuna though, so yes mainly sprialuna plus some cichlid flake will work good.

And yes second what raf says about species compatibility, try aiming for a 55 gallon if you can, will make things much easier.

The tank they are in now I believe is 50-55 gallon. I am going to set up a 20 or possibly a 30. Are there any fish I should think about putting in the 30?? Thanx all ur input is greatly appreciated!!!! :D

I would suggest separating the red tailed sharks. As they start to age they become very aggressive to each other. If you have 2 tanks move one into each.
