Fishbreeding is half science and half art. Many people may have told you their suggestions.
Forget them.
All you need to know is listed here.
The atmosphere is very important when breeding fish. It is important not to keep your tank too bright. Bright lights reveal some of the flaws in fishes faces- perhaps exposing a wrinkle here and there where botox has been overlooked. Be sure to keep the lights low when attempting to breed your fish.
A plain tank may not be the best atmosphere for breeding either; try mixing java moss and red roses to help set the tone. If you have a shower radio immerse it in your tank and play slow jazz to try soothing your fish.
Chemistry is important for any relationship. Water chemistry is an often overlooked parameter. If your pH is too high you can lower your pH by adding wine. For expensive fish, imported red wine works best. Goldfish will be fine with boxed california wine. Guppies are even less picky, Bud Light will suffice, or even better, horse urine will do. It is important you do not use a dry wine- fish like to stay wet.
Make sure your fish are looking their best before introducing them in the breeding tank. Shaving your catfish's whiskers can do wonders for his love life. Small doses of viagra can be added to the water if your fish is above the stately age of ten. Be sure to call your vet if spawning lasts longer than 4 hours.
More stubborn females may be induced to mate by reaching in the tank and slightly patting their ventral fin and saying things like "you dirty little dog-fish, you like that don't you, you cheap garr."
Some fish may ask for cigarettes after breeding. I personally recommend against giving your fish tobacco- especially for your lung fish.
