Hi all. I am looking for a foreground plant for my 29 gallon tank. I have a 20 watt light, co2, small gravel, but no fertalizer. I am thinking about possible crystalwort (riccia fluitans), dwarf hairgrass, or glossostigma. I want a hardy plant that forms a nice lush carpet. Thank you.

You won't get a good carpet of any of the ones you listed with the .7 watts per gallon of lighting you have. You might try java moss as it doesn't require a lot of light. Glosso definitely won't carpet in your lighting, it will grow tall to try to get to the light if it grows at all.

I agree with webcricket. If you want a nice lush carpet, you need more wattage. :) All the ones you mentioned are high light plants.

I agree with the others. If you want to grow most live plants, in particular the ones that you mentioned, I would consider upgrading the lighting to about or at the very least 2 watts per gallon. With two watts of light you should be able to grow some low light plants such as java moss, java fern, crypts, and anubias. If you want to grow other plants then you will need to increase the light even more to something like 2.7-3 watts of light per gallon and of course then you will need to think about co2 injection at that point.

While I don't think HC is very demanding in terms of light, I still think it needs around 2wpg or higher.

Java moss and perhaps aquatic clover (marsilea) may work as ground cover with that amount of light.
