Fozzybear Update (Pic Heavy)

I'm in love with your tanks and your JD!! Very nice.

thanks guys, I've really been working hard recently, those pictures of the 50 although the best of about 50 still don't do the livestock of that tank justice, they all just move so fast, but the tank is full of dark grey and green fish (except for the angels) and even has a couple black eleganus corys, i think there is one in the last picture of the 50, but at the same time its so hard to capture all my little dark darty fish on camera.

Also, any thoughts on sexing those bolivians? I'm kindof thinking the lower brighter one is a male

I know i'm kindof gushing but for continuity's sake I want to add a couple things.

I forgot to give a full tank shot of the 50 and a full stand so here they are.

I also wanted to give a before shot of the 50 (before, being before i pruned and removed the floaters)...please folks...critique me here, I've got a week off for spring break and want to project on the tank but can't think of anything to do, and the tank is only going to be in existence for another couple months here, I'm going to break most of the hardware into other tanks and am going to graduate my SA tank into a 125. So this is really my last opportunity to see any major changes pay off in the 50B layout.

Also, for people planning multies tanks...here is some evidence of how multies arrange their tank. I've done nothing to the tank except siphon out the piles of sand when they build up under the filter intakes, the fish are really quite brilliant they only deposit the sand in two locations and then i suck it out...either they've deemed the filter intake areas unusable (which is quite intelligent) or are utilizing my desire to protect my impellers to their benefit.

AHA! another post is coming.

Well, any of you guys who followed my other thread about my sick EBJD http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?260771-Worried-about-my-juvie-Jack-Dempsey will know that he passed away on Saturday night, really worked hard with the little guy and just couldn't do enough. So here I am all bummed out, and planning on waiting a good long time for another JD (i know right?) and my wife gets up on Sunday and asks if we can do something adventurous. I'm thinking mleh and so she suggests a big fish store down in the city a couple hours south of here. So, I figure "why not" and off we go to visit some fishes. Once we're there I was looking through their SA cichlids and a guy comes over and asks if he can help, I say "mind if I see your JDs? just out of curiosity. He starts laughing and walks me over to about a 75 gallon tank that has 5 huge bala sharks, 2 large silver dollars, 2 adult green terrors and an adult 5 star general...oh yeah and in the bottom corner there is about a 3.5" JD....without a tail. So while we're talking about the fish and looking at his tail the owner comes over, hears us talking and says "this fish is dead here cause I don't have anywhere else for him and he's dead at most people's homes...I'll give him to you for $3" :headshake2:.

You guessed it.

Bob:

Bob has a HUGE appatite and although somewhat skittish is actually quite healthy, I'm seeing some filament in the stump of a tail so I'm hoping he gets at least some back. But after loosing Jack and talking to Jeta I'd decided that come hell or high water I was going to get a TOUGH, SURVIVOR of a JD . This fish is hard to kill.

So, while sorting out where he was going to land I decided to re-arrange the top shelf of my stand and move the Beta into the old 10g and put the 20h up there to grow out Bob a bit in. So, while shuffling things around I realized I was 1 filter short for the 10g. So I went out in the shop and dug through everything I could find and came up with a powerhead and a media container for a Magnum 250 (Bob is shredding a crypt right now) that just so happened to fit together perfectly and here is what went down.

Parts

Powerhead

I love it when things just fit together

IMG_20120326_121118.jpg
IMG_20120326_121125.jpg
Put a little media in, You can see where it was just bypassing at first...needed to be packed down.
IMG_20120326_121227.jpg
IMG_20120326_121241.jpg
Cut up an old fishkeeping rag (means it doesn't get washed with detergent and has spent a significant amount of time underwater the material is a microfiber chamois type.)
IMG_20120326_121621.jpg
Plugged the top of the center tube so that water doesn't shoot right through
IMG_20120326_121806.jpg
IMG_20120326_121857.jpg
IMG_20120326_121924.jpg
Here it is running, the power head is underwater and the canister is out. If you look closely you can see the flow and you can see that the water travels all the way through the media (trust me I watched it) quite evenly and up out the top.

And here is Mr. Beta's new digs, filtered with the crazy filter...please note, both of the tanks that I switched got the same substrate with enough added to accommodate the larger footprints (new on bottom old on top) and none of the filters went dry. I even used the water from the old tanks to fill what I could of the new tanks. So they aren't uncycled tanks....they're insanely seeded.
Also, the crazy filter polished the water on this 10g in about half an hour. pretty nuts.

And here is the whole shebang...I need to redo the wiring...again :rant2: and I need to cover up the lighting on the sides...but it doesn't look as bad as I expected.

I can't stop laughing at myself...I am RIDICULOUS.

Seriously I think I need therapy.:screwy:

Okay. I'm totally, completely in love with Bob! What happened? Who ate his poor tail?? lol. I got a feeling he will thrive. I can't wait to see how much of it may grow back out.

I think he was worth all 300 pennies you paid for him! Poor Poor Bob.

You have gorgeous tanks and very clever thinking the way you came up with a filter. Bravo Sir!

Thanks allot man! I really hope Bob gets at least SOME tail...I feel bad for him bobbing around. I'm not sure who took off the tail, I'm thinking it was either the Green Terrors or the Silver Dollars, he was simply completely outmatched in that tank he was in, I honestly don't think he could have held his own against any of the fish if it was just one on one, the balas were legitimately close to a foot and I actually confused the silver dollars with red bellied piranhas when I saw them, they were big big big. Really that was why I got Bob, he looked so sweet and you could just tell his days were numbered if somebody ridiculous like me didn't come claim a $3 tailless fish

fozzy you really have a talent for fitting more tanks onto a stand than i would think were possible, looks great tho!!

lol, I specifically overbuilt that thing so that I could actually get about 75 gallons on each shelf and only hit a quarter of my failure weight. I love them all stacked together.

i do too, i would never have thought of putting the 10s sideways tho, pure genius. now i want more tanks hahahaha
