My father-in-law gave me a Eheim 2226 canister filter for free today. However, there were some parts missing. For example, the fine and coarse pads, plus a straw like stick that goes in the impeller. These i definitly plan to buy. Now for the carbon media, should i get the pad that eheim makes, or should i just buy carbon myself and just place it in the filter? Can someone also tell me where to place the media in this filter? For example, the caron, bio, or whatever else i can place in there?

Thank you

You only need carbon for specific purposes. What to need the carbon for? You will want a biomedia of some sort, biomax or filstars or whatever...

I thought we always needed to add carbon. I have two power filters, with carbon media in both on my 55g setup. Is that too much?

Carbon won't hurt but it does cost money and realistically lasts about 1 week at most. You are better off keeping some on hand for emergencies and using a ceramic bio media or more sponges and just rinsing them every so often. My sponges have been going for 2 years now.
