Free trees for Earth Day...what are your thoughts?

Got mine this morning....a Douglas Fir.

The funny thing is that even though it's free, it's an opportunity for Lowes to make a little cash. The instructions on the bag suggest planting the seedling in a pot for a year before planting it in the yard. Don't know how many folks brought the kids, and ended up buying dirt and a pot for the thing. Fortunately, I had an empty pot and a couple of bags of potting soil in the garage.

She looks like a little champ sitting out on the patio.

Be careful, that tree will 100' before you know it. Probably about the time your great granddaughter graduates from medical school

at my lowes the 'tree' was some sort of pine that said it was a landscape pine bush. grew no more than 5'

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll make sure not to plant it in the house.

Yeah. Looking at their website, it looks like they gave lots of different types of trees away.

100' trees are no problem for people with land. People with average yards, quarter-half acre or so, really shouldn't plant these trees, especially when there are so many other options. In my neighborhood alone there are four people with giant sycamores and one person with two silver maples obscuring their entire house. I'm sure the landscapers in the '70s didn't think this far along!

It may not matter to the homeowner (no one usually lives in their house for decades anymore) but someone eventually will end up with either a giant nuisance or an extremely expensive removal project.

A Douglas fir in a pot sounds lovely, glad you got a tree you were happy with :)

Actually they gave you a free christmas tree, just keep it trimmed right and cut it down when it hits 8 feet tall
