freshwater clams

I don't have any experience with them, but I believe I saw them in a store in Peoria not too long ago. I don't care for the store (SuperPets) all that much but if you can talk to Bob or the tall, thin, long haired guy (not sure of his name) they seem to be pretty knowledgable.

If they are Corbicula fluminea ( http://www.jaxshells.org/821aa.jpg ), I have them in my tanks. They seem to do OK, but I only ever see one of them, and only because it dug in at the very front of the tank next to the glass. I can watch that one taking in water to feed. Don't expect them to be very interesting.

My LFS has them for sale right now. It has something that is billed at "Shark tooth clams". They do resemble a shark's tooth so I can see where they get the name. I honestly don't know much about them, but the LFS claims they're filter feeders.

I have some Nursie, I picked them up from a local lake. Some of them are still alive, I brought them home last August. The largest few were maybe half inch, if that.

I never did anything special for them so that's probably why some haven't lasted. Though I'm not sure if that's because my betta manage to get them or just poor management on my part...

Thanks for the input folks. I guess I would not be gaining anything in the way of interest by adding them to the tank so why incur the additional bioload. I'll have MTS's to keep the soil opened up.

Another Peoria IL person
I don't care for Superpets either. I sorted out the dead and fungus infested but still living Betas last time I was there and told the cashier what I did as I left...nasty. One of the big fish in the display tank had a bad case of velvet I think, just covered with it. He's not there now. Nasty place, just nasty. And would never buy a puppy there either.

I keep Corbicula fluminea (the Asian clam) in my tanks. They are an invasive species that is just about everywhere in the US. I collect them from a local stream here in Alabama. They are incredibly abundant and I collect 50 of them at a time. I also collect some local snails that look like MTS. The do not eat plants and I think they are better than MTS because they do not reproduce in my aquariums.

I think the clams are great as living under gravel filters.

I remember reading on here a long time ago about someone asking about keeping clams in an aquarium.

But most of the responses to that thread were very negative.

I honestly can't even remember enough of the thread to be able to find it. But one point I vaguely remember is that because the clams are always buried in the substrate, as someone here has already pointed out, that when they die...well you don't notice it.

And then the rot pollutes the water horribly.

There were other points, but I can't remember them. I just remember the very negative connotation I formed at the idea of keeping some type of clam in an aquarium. Which sucks, cause I'd like to keep some myself.
