Freshwater Tank Crab Disappearance...

I have two new crabs in my tank. I should say I "had" two new crabs. They were there this morning, but when I got home from work, no sign of them. They were both very small and in a 35 gallon tank. Unless they were able to miraculously get out of the tank (covered, and no means out unless they scaled the filter...) could they possibly bury themselves in the substrate?

Do you know what type of crabs they are? Also what else is in the tank?

I think its very possible that they may have burried themselves.

same thing happened to me 2 days ago. They can climb just about anything that isn't glass; or at least that's what i have read. All freshwater or brackish crabs need to be out of the water some of the time. They will climb anything they can in order to reach the surface.

I'm new to this forum. I'm not sure what you mean by "crabs", when I keep freshwater aquariums I generally keep stuff I catch in local ponds and streams. Crayfish will absolutely get out by climbing up air hoses and getting out little holes in the lid. My cat usually backs them into a corner, they will stay alive a day or so at least and walk all over the place. I've found them all dusty and thrown them back in the aquarium and they're fine. (when they are dry and smell, throw them away) I assume you have looked under rocks, etc., crayfish will make burrows and hide under rocks but they don't bury themselves with no exit hole. Good luck finding them!

I'll bet it could be molting since you just got it. I've had 2 crabs fresh from the store do this. I think it's from the change in water from the store to home. They also aren't usually kept properly in the store(ie not brackish, crowding and no air access) so they don't get a chance to molt.

The other solution is it got out or got eaten. If it got out, good luck finding it.....my friend had one escape and it was on the opposite side of the house, up one floor when we found it...very dry and crackly. Another time we were watching a movie and we busted one crawling across the living room. :D priceless moment
