Freshwater tank - Good deal or not?

good advice...

Just wanted to see what other people thought somethin like that was worth

I've already posted it somewhere else, but Petco have a sale going at the moment: You buy an all-glass stand and get the fitting tank for free. I noticed that the resulting prices are often comparable to second hand offers, at least in a high price area like where I live.

I'm canadian keep in mind, so currency is slightly different...

Not really. Now adays there's barely any difference between the canadian and american dollar.

Sticking to canadain prices (the $40 for a 55 was buying the tank in the states), You can get a 55g for about $100 at big als, so lets estmate that a 75 rectangular is rougly $150-180 add in $20-$40 to build a stand wich won't be anywhere near as flimsy as the usual store bought one and yor at: $220 max., for NEW stuff. IMO you'd be ripped off paying $300. Of course, Bow fronts cost a lot more to make, so you have to factor that in - however, I don't, I consider what the fish would prefer (wich is a larger water volue and/or more floor space..

Personally, I don't like any tank wich distorts the image - like a bow front would.

In terms of the American dollar, $2 to $3 per gallon is a good way to go depending on whats in the offer. For a 72 gal used it would be between $144 and $216. Since it does not have a hood, I would offer 175.

125 Gallon

I just bought a used 125 gallon with good stand, lights, heater and 2 boxes full of random odds and ends that i still havn't figured out, all for $275, so yeah, it's a little steep.

I appreciate all your input. After looking over your posts I decided to offer them 1 of these options...

1) $275 for just the tank and the stand

or..

2) $300 for the tank, stand and a fluval filter they have collecting dust. (not sure if its a 200 or 400 model so i'll have to figure that one out)

keep in mind I got them to go down from $550...which was insane to begin with!

I'll be talking to them tomorrow so i'll post the results when/if the deal goes through.

Anymore opinions or thoughts are always appreciated.

I'm another one that just doesn't like bowfronts. Paying that much extra to get a distorted view of your fish doesn't seem wise to me- it's just marketing! We all want flat-screen TV's, and curved-screen fishtanks.

If you're taking up that much floor space, why not get a 75 gallon rectangular tank and save a pile of money? Then you're not locked in to a specific stand, light, filter, etc.

cover too

I bought the same tank and stand in the picture, AGA with matching stand. I wanted new and wanted stand that couldn handle the weight and matched. I love the tank but the stand? Wow is it cheap looking but holds the weight, 576lbs for water, 90 lbs tank empty, 100lbs stone, 20 lbs for lights and cover, total pushing 800lbs.
I paid just $450 for tank and stand, after shopping around. The problem is that it is a bow tank and to find a matching stand is close to imposible. Even to make one by scratch would be hard, unless you realy know what are doing.
For a " used tank " i would not pay over 200 bucks. The problem would be If you love the AGA bow 72, finding it used in your local area would be a shot in the dark, shipping is not worth it ( it would be more than the tank ). Tell them 150 bucks but dont go more than 200 bucks, just order it new at than point.
I love my AGAbow72!
The only thing that you need to special order would be the glass cover, about 40 bucks, it takes a standard light 48 inchs, and filters and heaters are all standard too.
