Frozen shrimp for Piranha? Is it ok for them...DO I have to let it thaw out? WOnt it make the teeth stronger?

yes you have to let it thaw, I don't think it will make their teeth stronger. You should buy uncooked, unpeeled shrimp, freeze it, thaw it when ready and then just peel them ur self to get most of the "gunk" out....shell, veins and other stuff.

you can buy like 2 lbs for 8 bucks from the butcher or Jewels if you can get to one near you.

Sublime is right on about the mess shrimp can cause. Good food for most any fish, just don't let it sit in your tank for more than a couple of minutes, will release tons of organic muck you don't need in the water.

If pirhana are the kind of fish that need their teeth whittled down, try looking up on google some recipes for making "plaster" food. Take simple Plaster of Paris, muck it up with some puree'd shrimp, squid, fish, and some flake food. Let it harden in the fridge, and then freeze it in appropriate size pieces. Just be sure your fish actually need dental help before trying this b/c plaster will raise your pH and the whole concoction is a pain in the rumpus to make.

BTW, forgot to mention, piranha shed their teeth in quarters so you don't have to worry about keeping them strong or sharp with certain foods.

ok...

I've read all over that the shell of shrimp are good for the RBP colors...

WHy thaw the shrimp out??? I dont thaw out frozen bloodworms or beefheart cubes.. So why the shrimp??

thx

Bloodworms tend to thaw in a matter of seconds in the water or on your hands if you break up the cube.

Yes, the bloodworms and other itty bitty critters thaw out quickly.

Now I can't speak for the pirhanas, but I'd imagine trying to chaw on a big frozen hunk of shrimp would be one heck of a brain-freeze, like when we eat too much Ben & Jerry's in one bite.

All over where? thats not true....shells are not good for piranhas at all, they can be too hard to digest and are about as nutrious as eating a rock. If you are worried about the "red belly" part of your piranhas then you should know that meat is the contributing factor, not garbage like shells. I believe I explained before that the whole "color" issue is with meat and live food. You can never really have control over it because at night they loose their red belly almost completely (usually). The red belly's are only radiently red after eating live food or meat. Not having a red belly doesn't mean somethings wrong with your RBP's, many people have RBP's with very faint red bellies and they are healthy as can be.....The frozen food should be thawed so that the gunk will come out in the water of the cup you are thawing it in, and so that they can eat it without a bunch of trouble. The brainfreeze idea might be a factor as well.

Yeah, sometime or another, turn off your light, leave the room for about 10 or so minutes, then turn the light back on and look at your little RBP's, I think they'll look quite different color-wise.

But yea, I would't really even bother feeding them shrimp. But if you do, then definitely take off the shell. I mean I wouldn't even feed shrimp shell to my wolffish, so I definitely wouldn't feed it to a piranha.

Just my opinion though I guess.

Good luck with them piranhas buddy, and why don't you post some pics up??!?!
