I want to know where you have gone terribly bad, so here it is.

What is the worst "move," or newbie mistake, you have done in fish keeping?

I'd have to say that mine would be buying 2 albino channel catfish for my 29 gallon tank, on the second day it was set up. :headbang2:

What's yours? Don't be shy!:D

Not that bad, but I put to Bumblebee cichlid's in a community tank years ago. They actually didn't cause that many problems...aside from eating the occasional tetra.

In that same tank, I bought a Jack Dempsey....I have no idea what happend to that fish. Within 24 hours of purchase it was gone..without a trace. I can only imagine the bumblee cichlid's got it.

my husband (his mistake not mine, lol) gave me my first tank, including 2 fancy goldfish, 3 adf's, a catfish of unknown type, and 3 common plecos....its was a 16g

Ours was adding fish to tank the very same day we set it up. Didn't know ANYTHING about cycling, or room req'd for different fish types, what fish get along, and don't, along with a variety of other (OOPS!!!)s. Hence part of why we now have EIGHT tanks - oh make that 9 with the re-set-up fry tank. We need to have a separate room for them built on to the house! :D

But, that was our first tank, and now we know better thanks to this website i found the very FIRST day we had the FIRST one. Now we use cycled media - usually from the first tank, to setup the next tank. And we don't buy fish from tanks with dead ones in it!!! I refuse to anymore, due to having Ick, and a variety of other troubles with ill fish.

20G, 3 Koi & 3 fancy Goldfish, ran filter for 24 hours. Nuff said. Funny thing is, 3 of the Koi lasted a year in a 2.5 before I "upgraded".

To all the beautiful goldies that I killed... sorry! :duh:

lol. The filter running for 1 day, then adding fish seems to be popular. Any other newbie mistakes that people want to share?

I bought a Senegal bichir for my 10 gal because the guy said he'd "be fine in there".

no real harm bc he was small and I upgraded soon after that (specifically for him)

Hmmm...i did an insane amount of research at my local library before setting up my first tank so i didn't have any real newbie mistakes. One i guess would be using a UGF that i now stare at daily wondering when im going to under take the removal of.

sorry its kinda of a week one guys

That would be my first stocking. 8 feeder goldfish and 2 koi in a 10g with no cycle. All dead in under 2 weeks.

Like 13, I did lots of research before I even bought my first tank, thus avoiding alot of newbie mistakes.
One mistake I made was to buy Eclipse hoods for my first two tanks, not realizing that I would be limited in the plants I could grow because of the low wattage of the light fixture in the hood.
