Here's a pic to wet the appetite:

Right now I have a home automation setup that is controlling the lights on both my aquariums and the heater on one of them.

A very quick rundown on what I am using:

Installed a program called Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi I had up and running. That's the brains of the operation.

On the aquariums, I bought some Sonoff switches made by a company called Itead and wired them into some extension cords.

I flashed a custom firmware on the Sonoff switches called Tasmota.

For the lights, I am using a Sonoff Basic. For the heaters I am using a Sonoff TH10 with DS18B20 waterproof temperature probe.

Some links for the curious:

If anyone wants more details, let me know.

I wonder if I could do shock collars w/ GPS on my kids and "oversee" them this way..

I'm kidding of course..;)

^ An impressive setup you've got going none the less Andy!

Thanks for sharing!!

The geek side of me thinks: Wow, that's freaking cool!

The pragmatic part of me thinks: But I already have thermostat controlled heaters and timers.

Neat project though. It'll be interesting to see how far you take it.

I made a "Basement Aquarium Water Change" group

I slide the one switch on top and it turns of my heater, my filter, and the automation that turns my heater on if it falls below 77°F in the tank.

I flick that switch when I am done, and it automatically turns my filter, heater and the automation for it back on.

I have a nasty habit of forgetting to plug my heaters back in after water changes. This should solve that problem.
