Hello Everyone,

I am having a small problem fungus in my 120 gal S. American Cichlid tank. My fish are pretty brutal to each other, and until recently they all heal nipped fins and scratches in a matter of days. Recently I've notice some white stuff sticking to my Green Terrors inside fin, it's been there for about five days. On my Argentina, its on the side of his body, but really small and hasn't changed in size for about 7 days now.

It's about time to change the carbon in one of my Fluval 404's but I'm thinking should I put an anti-fungal med in before I service one of the canisters? I use salt regularly and the temp is about 81-82 degrees.

Any suggestions would be great

Thanks!

Are you sure it's a fungus and not just a big scrape? Wounds come in all sorts of colors. Otherwise, if you see the fuzz, I'd treat. If it hasn't moved in that long though, he may be fighting it off ok. Frequent water changes would definantly help here to prevent any infections or further waste which will harbor more fungus. You might want to think about seperating some of your fish if you're having a persistent problem.

Thanks for the reply, I am pretty sure it is Fungus. I just don't like adding medicine to my tank. Do you suggest I do water changes instead and and go head service one of the canisters?

I have a UV filter, but I don't think UV filters work on Fungus?

Thanks

I have a Jag and it got Ick and fromthe wounds the ick left it got white fungus. What I did was bought medicine to heal the wound and to eliminate the ick. The wounds healed and the fungus left since there is nothing left for them to attack. Fungus is not like a parasite where it sees a healthy fish and attacks it or anyfish for that matter. Fungus only attacks sick or injured fish fixe the injury you get rid of the fungus. dont let it go for to long though it will eat away at your fish making the wound worse. I dont like medicine in my tank either but it was that or have my fish die it was a chance either way. Its you decision. The medicine I had did not require removal of the carbon so just look for a medicine like that. HTH.
