I recently bought a 10 gallon complete and set it up then went to the store and got 5 bala sharks and 2 Oscars for it. The tank looks very nice right in front of my bedroom window. I still need to buy gravel for the tank... does anyone have any ideas for color that will go with my fish?

If you place the tank in front of your window, watch out for algae growth. As for gravel, maybe the beige/white gravel. Depends on your room, I guess.

This is a joke right?

EDIT: I fear it isn't since you only have one post.... The first step for you is to take the fish you have back to the store. They never should have sold them to a person with an uncycled 10 gallon. These fish grow to be very very large and will need a much bigger tank than a 10 gallon can provide.
You will need to cycle the tank before you can add fish to it. Read up on that here: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=84598
Once you have taken the fish back, you can come back here so we can guide you in the right direction with fish more suitable for your tank. :hi:

Your second lesson of the day is to never trust the people at Petco. Most of the time they have no idea what they are talking about. If you go back and read my edited post you will see why. If you need more advice, it would behoove you to ask here rather than at Petco.

You want the water to be safe for the fish to live in. Usually you allow the tank at least 48 hours of running time on its own to make sure that everything is working properly. After that, you can add a few hardy fish to the tank to start adding beneficial bacteria to the tank so that the tank can be 'cycled'.

If you put the fish in right away, there is a high chance that they may die. That's why it was recommended that you return them. As for having those fish in a 10 gallon tank, the Oscars alone need about a 20 gallon tank without the Bala Shark.

man i feel stupid.... do you think they will give my money back for the fish??

Store credit, most likely. But that's just as good as you're going to want to buy fish one day.

Don't worry about it it happens... They had better give you your money back. How long ago did you get the fish? If they don't, ask for the manager and tell them that they knowingly sold you a bunch of inappropriate fish for your new tank. I don't see why they wouldn't take them back though. It's Petco, they usually have a 15 day guarantee.

Sorry about the whole "this is a joke right?" The whole thing seemed so crazy as you can understand now to have all those fish, which at adult size couldn't possibly be jammed in that tiny tank, it'd be impossible. :p: You live and learn and you get advice from people that actually know something...:thud:
