I am just putting this on here because it was truly hilarious. I just wished I had a video camera to record the whole thing.

I walked in the LFS store near my apartment called Old Town Aquarium. I saw a man standing next to their 1000 gallon saltwater display tank. There are probably about 30-40 fish in there. The man looked really familiar to me for some reason so I kinda eves dropped on his conversation with the employee. The man was trying to purchase the tank!!! He kept repeating that money was no object, and that he would pay whatever the young employee told him was a fair price. $200,000 he said. To my surprise and delight the young employe simply told the man, the this tank isn't for sale, and that if he wanted a 1000 gallon saltwater aquarium that he would have to do everything himself. Too funny. After the man left I finally realized who the man was...... It was Derek Lee, the starting first basemen for the Chicago Cubs. He thought he could just buy his way into the hobby.

p.s. I wonder if the employee was a SOX fan :)

Man if I was that store employee, I would have said, no, you can't buy this exact tank, but if you want to commission me, I will set up one just like it at your house, and you can pay me to maintain it. Imagine being able to set up a 1000gal reef on someone else's dime? That would be amazing.

Yep...would do it in a heart beat!

I've been to old town aquarium in chicago, and I dont remember a 1000 gallon coral reef....

Although 200,000 is just way too much. I bet the same could be done for less than $40,000.

Old town aquarium is a rip off.

come over to old orchard aquarium, its about a mile or so away from old orchard shopping mall. They have a 2000 gallon shark pond :D

I've been there too. I don't remember a 1000g reef either, although it wouldn't surprise me. They are pricey, but it's fun to look at their stuff while in Old Town on the way to the Spice House. (Spice House is quite reasonable BTW.)

As far as the 1000 gal reef. I am just stating what the employee told me when I asked him how many gallons the tank was. It was the biggest aquarium I had ever seen, so I believed him.

Old Town Aquarium is definitely a rip. When I asked how much the API test kit was they were selling it for $42. I am definitely glad I passed on that.

You might write to Derek Lee via his club or manager and suggest he visit this and similar websites to begin learning about fishkeeping (assuming he doesn't know very much... but maybe he does and just doesn't have time). Then he'll begin to form ideas about what he wants to do. He may also find fans who want to help him out :) Now, if he just doesn't get traded and have to figure out how to move a huge tank...

<--my three pygmy cories, got them in October or so, still going strong
