FW Moray Eel...

typically, there are two species commonly sold as the freshwater moray eel, Echidna rhodochilus and Gymnothorax polyurandon. as juveniles they can be kept in freshwater, although both are true brackish fish, which also do well in full marine conditions. neither species should be kept in freshwater for long term health.
they grow to about 30 cm. (12 inches) and if you're going to house this eel with other tankmates, a 75 gallons is appropriate.

mine likes to hide in rock work.
if i could do my set up over, id get a black dsb (like 5 inches) and 100lbs of lace rock. (the cheap dry stuff)
then i would keep earl and about 50 (different types) fancy guppies and such.

go with plenty of rock and alot filtration.
they like to eat live foods so i would put a couple of mollies in the tank with him one male and three females.

thats a pretty good idea, I was thinking of putting a male mollie and female one in there or guppies. Ive been setting up a ten gallon to try to see if this is something I like with a puffer or something little before I go get a big tank for it and go out and get him first. How much salt should I put in a ten gallon? b/c ive done the whole 2 tsp per gallon and it still shows nothing, do I need alot more?

cups per gallon isn't the best way to measure...
you do have a hydrometer or a refractometer right???? if ya do id say between a quater and 1/3 cup per gallon of salt will get you in the range i keep my tank (1.012-1.018

i guess i should elaborate a lil.
i really let my system fluctuate. with the evaporation in my tank, i probably loose about 5 gal a week.
i do WC on all 3 of my tanks every fri/sat. when i mix stuff for my reef tank i just add 1 half cup per gallon and usually get a SG between 1.022 and 1.024.
i try and keep that tank at like 1.024 1.026. it really hasnt changed fron 1.0255 in like 2 months (luck)
but my brackish system is a diff. story. as a range of SG in that tank is like between 1.012 and 1.020. when i do a WC i usually add about half the salt that i would for my reef, or just add pure fresh water.
i dont top off the tank daily like i do with my reef and FW.
so say i started sat with a full tank at 1.015. just let it be and on fri. SG is 1.020. thenn id do a WC with fresh. take out about 10 gal and drip water for about 2 hrs. now sg has dropped to below the original 1.015.
i really just let it do waht ever the heck it wants. i just make darn sure to not let it drop below 1.012. or rise above 1.020.
i just figure that all the species that thrive in brackish would never be in a consistant SG in the wild.
for about the first 6 moths i kept that tank at exactally 1.012.
then one time i screwed up a batch of WC, and accidently shot my SG up to 1.021. all my fish seemed way more active. it was real weird. so i dropped the SG to 1.018 over the next 2 days. everybody seemed fine, and my eel was eating noticably more.
since then i let it range.
so i guess an explanation of of his whole long winded nonsense is that you don't really have to be exact with the SG, but you will have to be able to keep it in a specific range

ok thanks, Yeah I have a hydrometer, and I would say Ive added more then a cup so far of salt, and it hasnt budged. So Im taking it I need more lol. Thanks
