My fx5 was shooting out tons of micro bubbles. It's now shooting out some micro bubbles and a couple big ones. I took the motor off and cleaned it. But it's still doing it. The only thing I've changed in the past two months or so is I added 3 "polishing" pads to the bottom tray. Is my motor going bad or what ideas to you guys/gals have? It gets a little better when I put a slight wedge in the side opposite the motor. It is making some noise that's abnormal.

In my opinion the bubbles are causing the noise you hear. I don't think the motor would be going bad.

That's normally the cause of the 404s being loud. I'd check your hoses. Or simply check to see if your air stones are headed towards your intake but I'm sure you thought of that.

Something isn't right, so air is getting in. Gotta fix that, and then the bubbles go away.

It still makes the noise at night when the bubblers are off.

The filter does? If so, that's because there's air inside of it. My AquaTop used to do the same thing. I replaced one section of the plastic intake tubing, which wasn't anything that even tried to resemble airtight, with some vinyl tubing, primed it again, and now, very rarely do I get bubbles coming out of it, and it's only because I move the intake up too high while doing tank maintenance.

Easy test? Rock the FX. If that causes more bubbles to come out, or you hear sloshing, you've got air in the canister.

I knew I had air in the canister by the noise. On a hunch a checked out my sponge intake. It looked like it was trying to be sucked through the intake. Took it out. Rinsed a ton of stuff out of it. And now the fx5 is off for a minute. Gonna restart it soon. The noise went away inside as soon after I cleaned it but still had bubbles for 5 min. We will see what happens when I turn it back on. Lesson learned...new sponge intake needs cleaned more frequently than I assumed. :-P

Its not the motor, its the polishing pads...
Use only 1 per tray. they tend to plug up pretty quickly and restrict flow..

This happened to me, You may be able to run 2, but not 3.

^^thats what I was also thinking. It's good now that the intake filter is clean. But I also assumed the polishing pads could have been restricting. Thanks for the input.
