Is anybody using the GE Merlin reverse osmosis system? If so, how do you like it and is it working for your tanks.

I'm getting water right now from the water mill type machines and I'm getting tired of hauling heavy water bottles around. I'm doing this so I don't have to chemical the water. I'm going to get an ro system but I'm wondering if the merlin will be worth the investment. Thanks.
 
Hi tself :) Im not sure what you mean by a "water mill machine"...What is wrong with your tapwater? RO systems work great, never specifically used the one that you are looking at, but a hefty investment if you dont actually need it. There are few freshwater species that benefit from RO, for most it is detrimental to their health. It has an extrememly low pH and zero buffering capacity.
 
Hi! Our water is very hard and has ammonia in it. The watermill machine is like a coke machine sort of that you put a five gallon water jug in and it dispenses water (15 cents a gallon).
 
Ahh, i see what you mean now...What you may want to consider is setting up a "holding" tank that can be filled with tap water...It doesnt have to be pretty, a stock tank from a feed store would work. Adding a filter system with seeded media would eliminate the ammonia...Add a heater to have it at the right temp...You could hide it in the basement somewhere and that way you would always have water available, at a fraction of the cost.
Exactly how hard is hard? Once again, unless you are keeping wild caught stock, the gh and kh isnt a big deal for most tropical fish...
 
Thats a good idea. I don't have a basement though. I live in south texas near Brownsville...the very tip of Texas. I do have a garage though. Might work. Thanks for the advice. You've given me something to think about. Tracy
