I'm setting up a second tank. There won't be any fish, and only a tuff of java moss in it for the time being. Does the tank need the filtration running. I'm just tired of the completely empty tank sitting there on the shelf as I wait for my first to cycle thru so I can transfer over some media.

Anyway. Is there some outright flaw in filling the tank up and having the moss in there for a few weeks. Will I need to have the filter on, and will I need to change out the water?
 
you should run the filter if you can.. wouldnt hurt anything, and leaving the water standing would result like nolapete said.. stagnant water. also, you might want a small light for the moss.
 
I decided the filter things aren't so expensive to prevent using it. The tank is up and runing sans the heater. Altho the sand caused a bunch of blue particles in this tank. I used the same sand in another and didn't have the problem. It's definitly kicked up sand dust so the filter will get it eventually. I don't think the java moss will mind a few hours in blue water.
And I have a picture (Girlfriend is the aquascapist, I just sat there and carried the buckets.)

Just decoration. It's a ramune bottle. There's a marble in the top portion. There are some indents so you can balance the marble and drink. If you don't the marble seals the top of the bottle. The drink tastes like sprite ish.. alot sweeter. I guess that's inspiration for the tank. It's got alot of tiny marbles as part of ths substrate. So, all in all just decoration.
