Hi all. I've been meaning to get my tank up and running for months now. Well, I'm sick of looking at it and all its emptiness in my livingroom and have committed to getting it operational (ready to start cycling) within the next week or so.

I'm not going for any sort of elaborate set-up. I'm just wanting a simple salt water, fish only tank.

Basic set-up: It's a 150g tank (5X2X2) with a 30g sump containing 9 gallons of bioballs and a couple of divided areas for filter type media (ie sponge/carbon). I have 300 watts of PC lighting that I previously used in a FW planted tank...but switched to regular flourescents when I went with a FW fish only tank as the algae growth was a PITA. I still have the 300 watts of PC lighting though.

With the purpose of the tank in mind...

1) Which lighting should I use? What types of life could I support with the 300W of PC lighting if I went with it? Again...I'm not going for crazy corals or anything...this is for fish only...just not sure if certain species require extra light... or if the extra light will open up a window to keep other interesting species of animals.

2) What kind of substrate? I'm thinking that I don't need a refugium, LR, or DSB or anything like that...just basic routine maintenance that I would do on a FW tank. I was looking at different types of aragonite...though I'm not sure what grain size is best for my intentions...or even if it's necessary. I figured it would be a good move for buffering purposes if nothing else. I used sand in my last FW tank and didn't like it at all because it was impossible to keep clean. Should I seed the aragonite with some live sand? Would it require to be a certain depth? Would it really even be that benifical for a fish only tank? OR...It might be easier and cheaper to just go with a safe regular sand (Southdown or Pool).

3) Decorations: OK...though not PC...I do have a couple nice pieces of dried out natural coral....that are pretty old....but very pretty. I figured they will help in buffering as well. Outside of those...I don't have anything else...maybe a conch shell. I have fake plants from my FW set-ups but don't think they'd go all that well. Any ideas? Any low requirement live plants that would fit the bill? Mostly I'm having problems figuring out what to put in the background as it will have to be pretty tall.

4) Protein Skimmer: From what I've read, they aren't necessarily essential for fish only tanks. I think I'll get one in the future though. Any suggestions?

Well, thanks for sticking with the post if you've gotten this far. Hopefully, I'll be on my way soon.

Thanks, Jamie

Well, as this is only going to be a fish only, it makes no difference what light you use as the lighting is not supporting any life, its simply there for you viewing pleasure..

For me, your two basic options are going to be either bare bottom, or a couple of inches of aragonite sand..something to aid in balancing the pH for you. I would not go with regualr sand as you will still have the potential for bad algae growth. Keeping the sand bed clean is a rather simple affair..All you need is a constant low flow going over it...this will hold any particles and detrius in the water column and be removed by filtration..

I dont see any issues with using the dead corals, they will, over time, become live bacteria surfaces and will effectivly aid the tank. On the freshwater fakes, not all are suitable for marine tanks and this would need to be checked out..

Live plants, well, there are a few options with your 300w lighting..check out the following link..aim for low to moderate lighting plants from there..

Of course, the only down side of adding live plants is that the fish you put in there may feed on them...

I dont see a need in adding a protein skimmer to a fish only. Some do though. You should ample filtration, working 200 - 250 gallon plus on your filtration to keep a good handle on it...

Just my opinion of course...

Thanks for such a detailed reply

atnixon, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. It helps a lot. I had to go out of town for several days and I'm just getting back to my tank. I'd like to order the sand ASAP. Does it matter what kind of aragonite I get (size or brand)? Any good internet stores to recommend? The LFS's are pretty expensive. Would it be worth the $$ to get a couple bags of live sand to mix in? I'm thinking 150lbs total would do it...if the live sand is a good option...how much should I get?

Thanks again.

What a deal!!!

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to share with y'all that I put in my order. I was planning on buying from BigAls...but was pleasantly surprised by DrsFosterSmith (DFS) when I went price comparison shopping. Both were very competitive...right up until shipping charges. BigAls wanted about $140 to ship about 200lbs worth of stuff. I expected the crazy shipping rates so I wasn't shocked. Then I put the same order in at DFS...and the shipping came to $14. I called them up to verify that they didn't charge me the extra shipping costs associated with the heavy weight items...and they said there was no extra charge on ground deliveries, only air. They said they cancelled the extra weight charge about a year and a half ago. So I just got what I think is a smokin deal from a reputable source. Just thought I'd share my experience in case anyone else is thinking about purchasing some heavy items. Years ago I bought 150lbs of flourite for my FW planted tank and paid through the nose on shipping. What's funny is that even with the crazy shipping charges...it would've been cheaper than the LFS.

Well, now that I've got my supplies ordered...now I need to figure out what to put in the tank. I've always felt that the pre-set-up research is the most fun. More posts to follow. :)
