i have a 55gal. with now 3 new geophagus pellegrini's and i know one is a male and one is a female
my question is will they be fine if i end up with 2 males and 1 female, and will they breed?
also will these fish breed if i were to add some kind of dither fish, and what type of fish would make a good dither fish for these guys, so far my ideas have been
harlequin rasboras
odessa barbs
dario loaches
scissortail rasboras

not all of them of course, just one type of schooling fish and maybe the dario loaches, the only thing is if they are going to make breed my geos hard then i dont want them

like always that you guys for your help and support

what, no one keeps geos any more?

I just started keeping redhead tapajos so I'm no expert, but it's my understanding that the geos do best in an unheated tank and need a cool period before they'll spawn. Not sure if Odessa barbs could handle the cooler temperatures but Rosy barbs might be an option.

Only Gymnogeophagus from southern SA need the cooldown period. Not Geophagus and the Redhead Tapajos you have.

Not alot of people keep Pelegrini. They are only now becoming more popular.

I am not sure if they are a Harem or pairing fish. Either way I doubt 2 males and a female would work, especially in that small of a tank.

I would keep it area specific and get large bodied Tetras.

thank you bill, i know that the pellegrini are a harem group, the male will breed with multiple females, but if the 2 males are going to compete with my 1 female, then i just might want to take back the one that im not sure if it is male or female. then my tank would have 1 male and 2 females, and a small group of some tetras, and that would all work? would i also be able to breed them if i have tetras present?

I have a trio of geo streindachneri (which are really similar)in a 6x2 with 6 reo tapajos and a school of black tetras and rummy nose and they get along really well. I notice with geos that their aggression levels while not high in the first place do reduce significantly with a larger tank. Can you post pics of yours?
