Getting Started

Oh wow! What a great setup! You know a rewarding and simple fish to keep is a Victoria Lake cichlid. They are endangered in their natural habitat so you can keep a species-specific rock/substrate tank while feeling good! Most Victorians are passive, so you dont get the fin nipping and complexity of Malawis.

Look into it. The American Cichlid Association has a group that maintain and distribute Victorian species. It's $25 to join and you can be apart of maintaining something endagered for minimal effort. Just do some research, it's rewarding to keep the Victorians.

If you want to go more colorful, Malawis are great! Do a labrochromis mix! the Blue and Yellows are stunning! :D

Can't wait to see this tank stock!!!

Thanks VivaLaVics - Very compelling thought to support display of an endangered habitat / species. I will certainly look into this. I've just been trying to familiarize myself w/ diff species profiles / habitats etc. I have decided that prob would not want larger species - fronts prob out - majestic fish, but would want them in larger ( wife would kill me ) tank - looking at smaller 3-6 in species. Maybe 2-3 groups? Tropheus sp has caught my attention. Labrochromis are very nice too. I stayed up most last night surfing the web. :coffee2:Trying to do as much as I can on my weekedn off. Thanks again.

FYI: Most Victorians stay around 3-5 inches long.

This is a good site for pics and basic info on victorians. http://www.african-cichlid.com/Dayglow.htm you can scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Next Victorian" there are about 20 species profiles here. :) The first one is of the species I currently have stocked.

Either way you go, this tank is going to be stunning with all the time and efforts you are putting into it's possible inhabitants. Tropheus are gorgeous! I would be reeling with ideas and wouldn't be able to choose either!!! ;)

I'll be watching! :)

An update. Several times during this project, things seemed to come to a stand still, and then start moving again. Well, things are moving, and am pretty excited that the end....really probably just the beginning...is near, sounds like 2001 a space odyssey. Anyway, this tank has taken another twist and will be putting my best effort into learning about SW/Reef husbandry ASAP, have been reading for past week. I know, went from planted discus to African Ciclids back to planted discus and now this. Sheesh. I just need to get things going so i can't change my mind again.

Well most of the things I need to get started I think I've got. Lighting AquaticLife 72in T5 fixture, pump, heaters, testkits, UV sterilizer - 40W, substrate, LOC Lines for two returns, Additives - buffer etc. - still learning about SW chemistry. 200 lbs Totoka live rock curing at LFS owner's house (who has helped me quite a bit with this project) Sump - approx 29 gallon - should be done next week. Still looking for skimmer (again, need a short one due to height restraint of stand), and powerheads/ water pump / ?wavemaker?. More updates as the actual plumbing begins. Comments, suggestions, criticisms, all welcome. Thanks in advance.

I woke up my poor discus when i was taking pictures in the room. I had to take a couple of their pics. I will miss these guys, have been growing them out since Feb.

Got in salt and my pumps. Took one of the pumps out of the box to check it out, magnet is pretty strong, attaches pretty firmly to side panels of the tank, i had thought that that might have been an issue, but no problem. They came in some nice packaging, but more importantly hope they function as well as they look. If things go ok, the tank should be up and running for a full water test this weekend. Fingers crossed.
