Well, I just ordered a GH/KH test kit. I have a GH tester that came with my master kit, but no KH tester.
Anyway, I still get confused with both and what they do. What is the ideal readings of both for my tank? Take a look at my sig to see what i have(46g)
My readings as of now are:

pH: 6.0
GH: 8 dgh - now this used to be a lot softer, about 2-3 dgh. same as my tap water
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 20ppm
KH: unknown

Will the KH determine what my buffering capacity is? If it's too low or too high, how do I go about fixing that?
Soon as I receive my test kit for KH I will post it.
Please help. Thanks!!

happychem......I read your post a little and then my brain started melting and then I realized I didnt have a clue what you were talking about. Seriously though some great stuff in there but I think I need to take some basic chemistry classes first.

If there's anything in particular that you found hard to grasp, please let me know. I tried to keep it as simple as possible while still explaining the concepts so if there's something that I was a little cloudy on, I'd like to fix it.

Im at work now and plan on reading more in depth a bit later cause I am very interested in this stuff latley. Thanks for the offer to contact you with questions....I am sure I will take you up on it.
