GH help required...PLEASE

Now that the water thing seems to be a go I get the idea that I'm supposed to start with a small number of hardy fish for a few weeks while the "cycle" establishes itself. My kids are twin 6 year olds so I was planning on letting each of them pick out one fish. Any recommendations on species that would be hardy, get along, and would socially provide multiple choices for additional fish in a few weeks?

Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Have you read the cycling links that livpadl posted early in this thread?

Doing a fishy cycle can cause damage to fish and shorten their lifespan. It will also take much more of your time with constant monitoring and frequent water changes to keep ammonia and nitrites below .25 ppm.

Do you know anybody that has an already established tank that you could get some filter media from to jump start the tank? Is bio spira available at your LFS?

I do not know anyone with an established tank. I don't mind a lot of monitoring and water changes initially. A big part of this rush is that this was a xmas present for my kids and I need to get them some fish soon. I agree the preferred path would be cycling without fish but that's not understood by a 6 year old so I'm going with my next best option.

telling your 6 year old that you have to make the new tank safe so the fishies have a nice home to live in is probably a lot easier than explaining to your 6 year old why the pretty fishies got sick and died . . .

I'm not planning on loading the tank up with fish. It's a 12g tank and all I'm going to do is put 2 small (2-2.5") fish in it. No more fish will be added until the tank has fully cycled. I read the cycling links and that seems to be the most common way to cycle a tank.

Species suggestions anyone?
