GH / KH problems

Coral or even aragonote is a bit slow for a change bucket, but as it is better to premix marine mix for some period prior to use, coral or aragonite can certainly be used in the mixing container.
I did mean the mixing container. My bad :)

As for pre-mixing, I know it's supposed to be done, but no one has told me why is that necessary?

Because the salts do not all go into solution as quickly as NaCl alone does - marine mix is a highly complex material, solution and equilibration is not instant.
Ah, thank you :)

I bought a 5 gallon "bucket" with a lid and am using a Rio 600 VT in there with temps about 78*.

That will work, right? The idea is to keep it mixing?

Assuming that the Rio 600 VT is a powerhead, it should work just fine. I use fairly fine sponge prefilters to protect my pumps in mixing vessels, and by holding undissolved fines they actually boost solution rates (holding the fines in high flow), but such is not essential, just closer to optimum. Don't seal the bucket (oxygenation without bubbling is good).

It's an aqua pump/power head, so the box reads. It circulates air via airline tubing. Oh, it's the one Tom Barr recommended for CO2 dispersion -- the one with the venturi? You may have read his post.

I have the lid on tilted so that it doesn't splash or anything but air can get in.

Now, once the water is "clear" colored and not cloudy, can I assume it's well mixed by that point and fully dissolved?

Excellent! Your pump obviously works better than this one as this one takes a few DAYS for it to clear, but it works so I'm happy :)

I'll get a better power head in a few weeks.

Okay, so I'll test 48 hours after it clears, just to be safe.

Thanks for all your help,

Roan
