I noticed that my male bettas fins were getting nibbled pretty badly so I got rid of all but my male betta, ghost knifefish (gender unknown), calico chinese algae eater, and a few snails. Everything was fabulous, they were all getting along and the bettas fins were growing back. A few days ago I brought home a female betta and slowly introduced her into the tank. I generally chck on my fish a couple times a day, especially when I get a new one. The first morning everything was fine, they were actually all ignoring each other. That evening when I went to feed them my male betta and ghost knifefish were pretty sad looking. The male bettas fins were really short and the belly fin of the ghost knifefish was all tattered. The female and the algae eater were fine. I'm not sure why the ghost knifefish and betta were having problems but it didn't start til I brought the female home. For now the two bettas are in a fish bowl together. I have kept him in a fish bowl before, but he doesn't seem to like it at all, even though I read that they prefer small enclosures. He really seems to do better in my 75 gallon with the others. Any suggestions? BTW, is there a way to tell a male black ghost knifefish from a female?

Thanks,
Amanda
