Ghost shrimp

I know about a hundred people are going to tell me I'm wrong about this, but my ghost shrimp ate each other. I don't know if they were alive or dead when they became food for their friends, but I KNOW WHAT I SAW! They disappeared day by day in my beta tank until there were only 2 left. I decided to move them to the gourami/clown loach tank when the filter on my beta tank quit and I had to relocate everyone until I could replace the filter. Yep you guessed it. The final 2 disappeared.... I thought the clowns were to blame, but I didn't actually SEE what happened, so maybe it was the gouramis.....
They were cute while they lasted though - except when they were openly being cannibals. :eek:
 
After they molt, they will sometimes eat their shells to get the calcium they need to harden their new shells. The old shell looks like a dead shrimp. I'm sure that's what you saw.

I'm aware they molt, and I have seen the "shells," and I've been told that is what I saw before..... but that was NOT what I saw. That would also not explain the disappearances.
 
Update on my ghost shrimp

After I spotted the dead ones in my tank, I netted em out. I had the four dead ones that I noticed, and tried to look for any more that I could find, but who knows. The dead ones were fairly easy to spot, they had turned from clear to whitish. I also picked out what I thought were newly dead ones, then realized they were empty shells. My loach has become more and more active lately, and does seem to try to put everything into his mouth.. I wouldn't doubt he ate a few. I have at least 3 live ones left, that I can see.

For $1(US) for 8+ of em I don't mind them getting eaten.. I would like to keep a few alive in there, however.. maybe I'll just keep buying more.


since the first night I've only noticed one more dead one, so maybe it was just stress/shock. We'll see how it goes.
