Giant Danios - too big for 20G ?

I am in a bit of a dilema; I have four giant danios in my 20G that I got when I first started up the tank (about 5 months ago). They are now full grown (10 - 12 cm long) having tripled in size. They are extremely boistrous fish and it looks like the tank really isn't giving them enough room to swim around in.

So I can't work out whether I should take them back to the pet shop and give them the chance of a life in a bigger tank. Then I worry that for all I know they could end up in a worse situation; after all at least I care about them and do twice weekly water changes, check the water etc. Maybe a 20G isn't overly small. Also they aren't behaving aggressively, they just look like they need more room for chasing each other all the time.

Any advice ?

I am changing my mind every 10 minutes and I think my husband is going to throttle me if I for his advice one more time (I believe he seriously regrets buying me the tank for my birthday so there is no chance of getting a bigger tank at this stage).

well if they arent attacking each other and the water chemistry is fine...

I would think its fine... but then Im probably wrong look at what my tanks have in them

Aaron you have waaaaaay too many fish in your 12 gallon, I'd say you should have 5 or 6 of your smaller fish in there tops. The bala shark must be removed they get up to 10 inches, the chinese algae eaters get big too I can't remember how big though. You need a 40-50 gallon to house all those fish.

No giant danios in a 20 gallon. They are fast moving, darting fish, and need lots of room. Take them back.

O.K. I'm leaning more towards taking them back to the shop. I just worry that they'll end up in worse situation, plus I have to admit I am quite attached to their hyperactive antics.

I got them cause I didn't know any better when I set up the tank and the LFS said I needed 'sacrificial fish' (their words) to start the cycle. They recommended the giant danios.

I would try leopard or zebra dainios for a 20 gallon high.

giant dainios are good for 55 gallon and up tanks
