I am going to purchase a 180 gallon aquarium. I am trying to decide between a glass and acrylic. Does anyone have experience with both? All comments are welcome.

Well, I live in a land of earthquakes where acrylic sort of rules for the paranoid. But I like glass.

What area of the US are you in? You may have different issues than I do.

What are you planning to stock it with? Some fish can damage acrylic. Weight is another consideration, since glass weighs more. Also look at the shape you want. I prefer more front to back depth than a standard 180 footprint, so even if I went with glass I wouldn't get the 6 foot version.

I really think it comes down to preference. I am partial to glass.

Glass for the long haul, but not if you are a frequent mover. Acrylic has advantages with light weight and unusual shapes, but it does scratch over time and doesn't always offer the best viewing at rounded corners.

I think it's only real advantages over glass is what fishorama and Rbishop said. It's more shock proof than glass and can be configured into shapes that would be difficult and more costly with glass. Obviously a bit less weight with acrylic as well.

Also I have never worried about the weight because I have always been able to get that helping hand when the time comes to move the tank(s).
