Hi all,
So I am new (to the forums). and I am trying my hand at breeding. I picked GloFish to start with since I didnt want to deal with the livebearers like my guppies or swordtails. I have set up a breeding tank. I have a small filter in it, with a heater set to about 78F. I have 6 Glofish in the tank right now and I have the bottom lined with round glass marbles. I also switched over the food to blood worms, hoping it will induce some egg laying. I wanted to know how big the tank should be. It actually is just a temporary tank for them to breed in, (clear plastic bin). I believe it is around 3 gallons. Is that too small? And does the setup sound alright?

Thanks everyone
Chris

ps, also have some fake plants in there.

The breeding of glowfish is illegal and considered patent infringement. In other words you cannot breed them on purpose to sell.

The tank needs to be a 10 gallon for that many fish.

Yes I am aware of the legality and the copyrights. These fish are NOT going to be sold, they are simply for pleasure.

i could just imagine the court case.

Judge: and what are the charges?
Plaintiff: breeding illigal fish.
Judge: what evedence do you hold against the defendant?
Plaintiff: this 10 gallon fish tank, these marbles, and several spawning mops. this is the perfect setup for breeding glofish. we believe there was foul play at hand.
judge: were you czac breeding glofish?
czac: no i was not. i was breeding "regular" danios
judge: ok well. we have you polygraph test in....czac........you are the father!......oh wait, this isnt maury. i mean, czac, lie detector test says that you are lying. and that you were breeding glofish! WHAT OMG YOU ARE THE SCUM OF AMERICA! I SENTENCE YOU TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT!!!!
czac: NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And just to add on to that.....I would get the polygraph, after which they would discover my secret plan to create an underground black market to sell home bred GloFish! Muahahaha.

I recently saw pictures of offspring of glofish bred to longfin leapard danies. Those were some really beautiful fish.

Patents only apply when monetary value is gained from using the invention. Breeding them for home use is by no means violation of patent law.

BTW the patent on the jellyfish gene that causes them to "glo" expired 3 years ago. I don't believe that they were allowed to patent the gene + danio combination (I could be wrong). If they did it is still due to expire soon.

I wouldn't worry about patent infringement if I were you as long as you don't sell them they have no ability discover the patent infringement.
