Glofish dying?

I think they are neat looking and love the color. How big do they get? I am looking for fish that have a lot of color because I had a SW tank that I ended up taking down and quitting because of expense. The color variations is what made me want to do SW verses FW. Since I am now going with FW, I am looking for the most colorful fish to put in my tank but, only ones that will be compatible with Clown Loaches.

What do people have against them?

They are a modified version of zebra danios. They inserted a coral gene into them to make them bright red.

Hmm.. I don't really have a problem with that... there are plenty of fish (probably more than we even know) that have been genetically modified one way or another.

Furthermore, I don't see how anyone who keeps a fish in anything other than its REAL NATURAL environment can criticize anyone who does anything to fish. Technically, we're all 'altering' our fishes' lives by not allowing them to live in their natural habitat.

Oh, and wasn't it Luther something that bred the first glofish? He's in the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (which is non-fiction before anyone jumps in) and it talks about how he bred them and displayed them in a restaurant in Savannah...

just rambling

Altering a fishs live is different from altering a fish........

I originally started out with 6 glofish. My first one was heavy with eggs but soon died. I figured with it being just days after getting her, perhaps it was stress. Well several weeks later another female became heavy with eggs then died during a PWC though this was a daily routine since I was/am cycling. I'm just wondering if anyone else has noticed this in the glofish or even zebra danios? Is this common or have I just had a few strikes of bad luck? I am wanting to find out so if it is actually a defect in glofish, I will know to not buy anymore as I don't want to support the breeding of a defect in any fish of any kind.
Are you sure the two fish that died were pregnant and not displaying symptoms of bloat or dropsy? Often new healthy looking fish can have problems (like internal parasites) when you buy them and the stress from the move, new tank and/or water type may flare up symptoms the fish was hiding before. Also, you have to sort of expect fish going through a cycle to be under further stress due to all ammonia/nitrite in your tank. I doubt it’s any sort of breeding of a defect, more likely just a case of stress leading to death.

i have had glofish as a newbie, they are just as hardy as regular zebra danios, which is probably THE hardiest frestwater aquarium fish around. None of mine died or had any problems after the crap i put them through as a newbie in a biorb. Anyway you said the tank is getting cycled, maybe bad params + stress + preg finally killed the fish?

very beautiful fish, for those who think they dont look good, try view it under strong lighting from power compact or metal halid (or blacklight), i bet it will change your mind.

It might be beautiful but MAKING it BEAUTIFUL yourself is mean

Ok, let's clarify AGAIN. These fish ARE NOT DYED. They are BORN that color. GST, try to pay attention.
