I think they are neat looking and love the color. How big do they get? I am looking for fish that have a lot of color because I had a SW tank that I ended up taking down and quitting because of expense. The color variations is what made me want to do SW verses FW. Since I am now going with FW, I am looking for the most colorful fish to put in my tank but, only ones that will be compatible with Clown Loaches.

Ok, let's clarify AGAIN. These fish ARE NOT DYED. They are BORN that color. GST, try to pay attention.

I know that. I mean Modifying a zebras gene just to make them "more pretty" is mean.

i don't see how -- i'll bet they don't feel a thing

yeah i know, its just, if you put them in the wild, they wouldnt relly "fit in" because they arent "natural"

They'd probly die because they arent camouflage with the surroundings as regular zebras probably are.

Anyway lets get back on topic! :OT:

Yes it is. But just because it is means nothing. I would lovee to have them as a pet but your right they shouldn't alternate a fish's genes just to make them gorgeous.

Altering a fishs live is different from altering a fish........

Furthermore, I don't see how anyone who keeps a fish in anything other than its REAL NATURAL environment can criticize anyone who does anything to fish. Technically, we're all 'altering' our fishes' lives by not allowing them to live in their natural habitat.

Now you've really confused me... you're saying it's OK to alter a fish's life by keeping them somewhere other than their natural environment but it's not OK to change a fish because they couldn't survive in their natural environment?

Please elaborate because you've really lost me.

From GloFish®
GloFish® fluorescent fish are beautiful and unique fish that were originally bred to help detect environmental pollutants. It was only recently that scientists realized the public's interest in sharing the benefits of this research. GloFish® fluorescent fish are safe for the environment and make wonderful pets for new hobbyists and experienced enthusiasts alike.

You can find out more about them on the website, they weren’t originally bred just to make a better looking fish. I think they are ugly anyway.

No I said its ok to keep them in a aquarium as that is a simulation of a natural enviroment and we are not hurting the fish nor altering there natural traits.

Glofish are not natural as in their color and I think its wrong to dye, tattoo or even change a fishs trait solely based on "Prettyness" and "sales". But since glofish werent harmed its ok. I still wouldnt buy them

i love it when people get on their soapbox. Would you buy guppies then? because guess what? they are manipulated by selective gene breeding as well, how about fancy goldfish? we all know those are totally natural! :o oo and the pretty orange colored discus, do you think they actually existed in the wild and not through careful breeding from some wildcat albino type genes? and everyone's favorite cherry red shrimps? guess what there were no CHERRY RED shrimps in the wild. It just happens some guy found a few mutated freak shrimp (neocaridina si) that looks red instead of normal glass color and started breeding them.

so please get off your highhorse, it's all the same.

dye or injection are the ones i have problem with because they physically tortures the fish

We can have our own opinons you know.

Edit: please Explain how fancy goldfish and guppys are "modified" the way they are. Thank you.
