Hey ya'll,

I'm going home for a few day for my sisters wedding (not REALLY a vacation is it?!) in about 3 weeks and I'll be gone for 4 days. I've seen mixed reactions to the auto feeders that hang on the side of your tank and dispense food but I'm going to buy one this weekend and test it out. I was wondering tho, if the feeder doesn't work well, will the fish be okay from thurs morning until monday night on their own? Should I put some carbon in the filters while I'm out? I'll be getting a timer also. Do they make timers to control two things at once? (ie, turn lights off and turn airstone on)

And what to do with Frank the Betta who's living in a little flower bowl at the moment? The bowl is only about 2.5 liters...long story but he prefers it there. I change his water every couple days right now but should I put him in one of my 2 gallon tanks with a filter and heater?

Last time I asked a friend to feed the pets she ended up throwing a huge party all weekend long and my neighbors did NOT appreciate it. LOL So I don't really have anyone to ask to come feed everybody. :(

I'm flying. They won't let me on the plane with him will they??

Take him with you. Get a critter carrier, put a little gravel in it. I traveled 450 miles in the car, and it worked fine.

Dont do that! The ammoina can and will build up really fast, and the temp will not stay stable. Sure it maybe cool, but not the best idea.

No carbon. IT wont do anything.

For auto-feeders Iv heard a lot of horror stories. But most were with cheep feeders. If you want one go with the Eheim. I use it, and have never had a problem. Plus there are saft guards on it, to keep the food in the feeder, and not all in the tank. (http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=22595;category_id=1761;pcid1=2911;pcid2= )

Yes, the fish will be fine. If you do a water change before you leave the fish will be ok for 2 weeks or so.

Frank will not be fine. He needs a filter and a heater will be a good idea. A filter with bacteria from the main tank will be good. With that you are all set.

I wouldn't wait that long to change the water. But, lots of people keep bettas in bowls smaller than the container he was in. I did frequent water changes until I could get him back in his tank. I would do that only temporarily. Please use a small tank to keep him in, with a small filter and a heater.

I wouldn't waste your money on the feeder, the fish will be totally fine without being fed for a few days. Honestly, I wouldn't even mess with a timer. The bubblers don't do a whole lot in terms of oxygenating the water, and the fish will be fine without the direct light for a few days ;) !! I promise! Just do a good maintenance/water change before you go

As for the betta, I would start running the 2 gallon filter on the main tank now and then transfer him to the tank with the filter a few days before you leave, that way you can test the water, make sure the tank is cycled and the heater/filter is working alright before you go :thm:

Thanks for the replys ya'll. Frank is gonna move into the 2 gallon...Dug out an extra heater and I've got the mini-filter running right now to get ready for him.

Holly, how long does it take to finally relax and not stress about leaving your fishy critters for a few days?! I have no problems leaving the cats on their own for a week even tho they're the ones I need to worry about because they only get up to no good when I'm gone. LOL

If only I could train the cats to feed the fish...

OMG you are so right!!!!! I just gave some samples to the kittys and they went crazy begging for more. Poo pulled the bottle out my hand even. lmao!
