the temp of my tank swings between 82-84ish down to 76ish occasionally. my snails are usually pretty docile, but today when i went to check the tanks temp, i saw the snails moving around pretty energetically (for a snail), and the temp was around 72.

I was wondering if having the temp up around 80-84 is harming them or if they just prefer colder water, or is it just a coincidence?

Mystery snails are fine between 70F to 85F, temps as high as 85F will not harm your snails in any way.

FYI, snails are not warm blooded, so like a lizard/snake/turtle they are more active when their environment is warmer. I don't know why your snail was 'zooming' ;) around at 72F.

Also, temps below 65F can be fatal to snails.

Just a hint. It's better for your tank ecology, biology and chemistry to do smaller, more frequent PWC's. Instead of doing 40-50% every month or every two weeks, do a 25% PWC every week. This keeps the the water parameters more consistent and if your fish actually look more healthy and active after a PWC, then doing them more frequently is even better.
