Anyone got one? Had one? Know enough about em to gimme some background on the husbandry of em?

from reef fishes vol. 1;

Gymnothorax melatremus

Length: 18 cm or 17in.

Captive care: ideal for a smaller aquarium. should be housed with plenty of suitable hiding spaces. it will hide most of the day and often with its head exposed and can be trained to come and accept food when the lights are on. will it crustaceans but too small to eat most fish.

aquarium size: 20g

i have personally never seen one where i work but if you are interested there is another cool moray that gets to around 20" which is the White eyed moray which was $140 for a full grown adult. but i was looking for a golden for a little while and did not see one offered for a few weeks. but good luck finding one.

Are you talking about the golden dwarf moray (Gymnothorax melatremus, ~1') or the goldentail moray (Gymnothorax miliaris, ~2')?

Pretty typical eel care for both - feed to satiation a few times per week, provide lots of hiding spaces, and keep with large, passive tankmates. (Gymnothorax spp eels are piscivores, and even a golden dwarf will pick off smaller fish like firefish, gobies, etc). The golden dwarf is always a uniform gold color, but the goldentail ranges from having gold dots up to nearly solid yellow with black streaks. See http://www.themarinecenter.com/ for some really nice goldentail specimens. Neither goldentails in this kind of shape or golden dwarf morays are cheap, so plan carefully.

The dwarf was the one I'm interested in... This month's Aquarium Fish Monthy has an article on nano-reefs and the Golden Moray is listed among potential stock... Beautiful little critter, but at those kinda prices, not one I wanna mess with ;)

How big of a nano are you considering? If it's in the 25-30g range, you could keep a nice, cheap snowflake in there for a long time before it would need larger accomodations.

Nope, I'm thinking of doing either a 6 gallon or 12 gallon Eclipse on my desk at work...

Well, I wouldn't put even a dwarf golden moray in a 12g, at least not once it got past 6-7" in length. If you want something odd, go for a fang blenny, small angler, sand perch, etc - something of a more manageable size.

The article I was reading said the GME only got 7", that's why it got my attention... The plan, if I do one, is probably a single perc and a couple peppermint shrimp... Always a fun desktop look =)
