A friend of mine has picked up for me an African Butterfly (Pantodon buchholzi), which I've wanted for a long time. For the past couple of weeks, I've had two Golden Wonder Killifish (Aplocheilus Lineatus) in a quarantine tank, waiting to move them into my 90 gallon tank-but that's where the butterfly is headed. I know they're both surface dwellers, so will it be asking for trouble to put these fish together?

If the killies are small enough to fit in the butterfly's mouth, I think yes. Otherwise, the butterfly should ignore them. Provide some floating plants for it to hang out in, and be sure to have a well covered tank.

Nope--totally different fish. UDC are synodontis spp, the african butterfly is the only species of pantodon's in the aquarium. They lurk under the surface, feeding on insects and such. Despite their appearance, they are oriented 'normally', rather than upside down like the cats.

On an side note, these fish have some of the most complex eyes in the FW aquatics, and are studied intensively for this reason.

Adult killies of this variety (I just got a pair recently as well) should be ok with butterflies. Just as long as your killies are at least 1.5".

1fish 2fish - as far as Im aware the upside down catfish is not the same as an african butterfly.

OG - Do you mean Pantodon's eyes? Or Killiefish? If ABF, I'd never read about that before....I'm interested.
