Hey ,
I was just reading on skeptical aquarist that golden zebras are bleached - is this true? i thought they were a genetic hybrid or something much like they come up with different types of platies etc?

Thanks

It can't be true. First of all, the fish would die. Second of all, the fish would die. That's my story and I'm stickin to it. :)

I believe so, my book says they come from southeast Asia - think rice paddies. Considering the book was copyrighted in the 70's I'd guess if they've been bred into existence it was before many people kept fish.

Bleaching will kill so that myth is BUSTED.

How much are Gold Zebras? around here they go for 40-50, but 5 years ago i found the steal of the century,
L270, Widebar Pleco

got it for 9.99, under the name "WideBar Pleco" to me, looked like a gold zebra for 40 dollars less. if you dont have a Golden Zebra yet, try to get the L270, looks the same and hell of alot cheaper, BTW it has been living for 5 years in a pH of 8.2 which is usually unheard of.
