I have an aquarium w/2 small fancy goldfish. Can anyone recommend other living things (besides fish) that I can add to the tank. Recently I added two apple snails, and they appear healthy and happy.

Thanks.

Bruce

what size is the tank? When you say fancy, what do you mean specifically? Typically Goldies are coldwater fish so would prefer cooler temps than tropical, they also get different foods.... possibly different pH.....

Dangerdoll,

Tank is about 35 gallons, the goldfish are small and plump. Temp of water is 72 degrees. Just wondering what other types of creatures can be added.

Nothing they can swallow or get lodged in their throat, so cories/otos etc are out.
Nothing that can latch onto them and suck their slime coating, so plecos and the like are out.
Nothing that likes tropical temperatures, so most everything else is out.

Most serious Goldfish fanciers keep their Goldies alone- with other Goldies.
Possibly a Hillstream Loach, but again a curious Goldfish can suck them up pretty quickly, and if you haven't got long tweezers and a steady hand you can lose the Goldfish.
Two Goldfish in a 35 gallon is very close to being maxed out anyway.

Sorry!

I thought goldfish need 10 gallons each......am I wrong? So couldn't you have 3 in a 35 gallon?

Okay, seems like any fish other than a goldfish is out. How about certain live plants, or more snails or something. I understand the need for a large tank for a few fish but I would like some more activity ongoing in there.

Plants are an experiment in a goldfish tank. If you are willing to try that experiment then go for it. Goldies love to eat most plants. Some they seem to leave alone. Stay away from any soft stem type plant (watersprite etc..) and probably grass as well. Perhaps java fern might work out well.

One of those extremely large apple snails might be too big for them.

At work we had a bristlenose in a coldwater goldfish tanks for 3 years plus untill we moved him to the new tropical tank. He she lived a happy life in coldwater.

You need to get some kind of theme going I know its not
a living creature but a theme can make a tank come to life..
in your tank lets see if i can think of one that
would be fitting for a goldfish hmmm.. fake plants
will work you can suction them down to the bottom
hmm maybee im not sure but you could get some
type of pirate or a sunken treasure theme going you could get
im not sure if they have these but fake gold coins (plastic as the
metal would rust) and put them on the bottom of the tank maybee you could get a sunken treasure chest..that blows bubbles that opens
and closes the lid,,i know ive seen em around. get it gold fish golden treasure well its just a thought but definatly get some type of theme going in there ....
... think about it good luck  :troll: :sad :dance :dance :OT: There are also fiddler crabs that do the robot its hilarious to see but they need something above the water line to breath and the tank needs to be complety sealed so the dont crawl and get stepped on
