goldfish in a 10gallon

oh yeah-we used to have koi and goldfish together and the koi killed/beat up a lot of the fish so we eventually had to put a separator in the pond to keep each on their side. these were mainly fancy and slow moving fish (not comets)

and then the racoon came and dipped out most of that fancies:( those were all of my dads fish-some he paid $80 for:(

Goldfish really do need large tanks....

Introduction and Description

Carassius auratus, or the goldfish, is probably the most tortured fish in the world. There are nearly a hundred varieties of goldfish. They are all the same species and can interbreed (although sometimes difficult and not recommended to mix varieties). Goldfish grow large if given proper room and food. Common goldfish with 50+ gallons to swim in, grow easily to a foot long. Lengths of six inches or more for most varieties are not unheard of. Thus, goldfish are absolutely unsuited for life in bowls or small tanks. They are in fact the least suited of most commonly sold fish. If you want a bowl or small tank, keep small tropical fish with a heater or small coldwater fish without one. If you go so far as to desiring no electricity at all, a betta will do well in warm areas and a paradise fish in cooler areas. Even then, anything less than 2-5 gallons for a fish or two is cruel in my mind. Bigger is ALWAYS better when it comes to tanks. Bigger tanks are also easier to care for.

Jacblades, not all Goldfish will reach 12-16 inches. And not all with grow as fast as others. But many will reach an amazing length. But sayings how you got the fish from Walmart, I'd say thats the main reason he isnt growing as much as he should. :(

125gjoe, I love Robyns pond site. Its just great! I have the same picture of the fish, cat, and bowl on my Goldfish page as I love it. Kazaa has it if anyones interested. :D

silentskream, while goldfish might not die without a heater, it doesnt mean they dont need one. In fact... they do. That is a myth in regards to what these fish "need" and do not need. I will copy a piece from my own website so you can read what I have to say about heaters and goldfish.

Heaters and Goldfish
Many aquarists are divided on whether or not heaters are really needed for Goldfish. I say yes, heaters are a must for all aquariums. Heaters not only heat your tank to the desired (ideal) temperature, but they also make for a stable temperature year round. For the majority of us who like a cool house in the summer, a heater is a must. I keep my own home at or around 65-68* F. all year, so a heater is required in all my aquariums.

I quiver at the thought of Goldfish being classified as “coldwater fish” as they are not in coldwater at all in the wild. If you trace the origin of these fish back, they came from Asia! True, pond fish can tolerate a great wide range of temperatures but for the majority of Goldfish keepers who keep fancier varieties in the home aquarium, these fish should not be kept in unheated water. To aid in digestion, I always recommend a temperature of 73-75* F. for all Fancy Goldfish. Common Goldfish (pond fish) in the aquarium can be kept at or around 65-75* F. But again, a constant temperature is the key. In most cases, an aquarium that bounces 5-7 degrees each day and night will not make for healthy fish.

I have to agree with aquariumfishguy here: heater's don't simply heat they keep a steady temperature. That's why they're important. With A/Cs, windows (which can both be opened or allow light in), and the myraid of other things in the home, I would be surprised if anyone's house kept a steady enough temp on its own.
