Hello I have a 10 gal aquarium with 4 gold fish in it,(they will be moved to a pond my parents are letting me build) But for now they are in the 10 gal. well recently they have been like repededly opening their mouths and closing them. I have been feeding them well and I didn't know what might be wrong can you give me any help. Thanks for your time.

Are they doing it at the surface of the water? Are they fully opening their mouths rapidly? Anything else look wrong?

The Black Moor I was keeping for my girlfriend was sick when she gave me it to take care of. She had it in a 6.6 Gallon with a pair of betta's. He's all better now but goldfish need a lot of room. Glad to see you have plans for a pond.

Yes Spykce i'm feeling much better now :P Those mean old betta's always staring me down, i think they were jealous of my fins.. and then the flu bug hit.

they'll probably be dead before that happens. ONE goldfish fills a ten gallon tank. FOUR goldfish in a ten gallon tank are on their way to that big goldfish pond in the sky.

opening and closing rapidly? have you checked your ammonia and nitrite levels?

How big are the goldfish now? They might be able to make it if you do waterchanges twice a week. What are your readings on ph, nh, no2, and no3? How do you mean they keep opening and closing their mouths? Is it rapid? Is it like yawning? If not it could be their normal breathing.

The only time you should really be keeping goldfish in a 10 gallon tank is when you are doing some short term QT/Hospital work. Otherwise a bigger tank is a must. Consider getting a 55 gallon tank to store them in while you build the pond.
