Goldie Gel Food Noob

The stuff of various densities settled out. If you intend to use gel food as the staple, i would either follow one of dataguru's tested recipes (check the gab goldfish forum) to the tee, or (preferably) buy a commercial mix like the ones that mazuri produces. Other than that, there is really no way to know if the formulation you've made is nutritionally balanced or complete.

I was on GAB and this is very similar to one of the recipes there. I sustituted salmon (with skin and bones) for the protein and had to replace kale with red swiss chard, but otherwise it is identical. Would this affect the densities by that much?

I realize these substitutions will affect the balance of the food - they eat Hikari wheatgerm pellets as well as this gel food, about 50/50 so far.

I wouldn't worry so much about the food settling out, unless you see that they really prefer one of the layers over the others. As long as you're supplementing with a high quality diet with the proper nutritional profile for goldfish, it shouldn't be much of an issue. Depending on how they do on the wheat germ pellets, it might be prudent to switch to one of the hikari sinking pellets (I've had good results with saki and the lionhead pellets) if you notice any buoyancy issues developing.

I wouldn't worry about it settling out. Your substitutions seem perfectly reasonable to me. Looks like goldfish nom. :)

Thanks guys - they love it and so does my dojo loach. It does sink, which is good. So far no issues with floaty fish - I watch carefully for this and would switch to a sinker if need be.

Thanks again!
