I know that rafael cats are very inactive as are banjo catfish.....would one make a good inhabitant for a 5.5 gallon?? I am looking at having a 5.5 gallon with just one odd fish.....any suggestions?

A 5.5 is a very small tank for most odd-balls.

A crayfish?? Lower the water and raise a newt??

Go for the crayfish. If your looking for something different a crayfish is it. I currently have a 20 gal. (long) native tank set up with a crayfish, and a few dace. The crayfish is fun to watch. When I was younger I had an old slate bottomed 5 gal with a crayfish, and I had one in a 29 gal oddball community tank, but an african knife fish got him while molting. I find they do best with a decent current of well filtered water. Fine gravel and a hiding place, where they feel secure but you can still see them. Driftwood is good for hiding because they can often get out from beneath it, even if it shifts while they're excavating. They'll eat just about anything they can get their claws on, fish included. In case you're not familiar don't be alarmed when they molt. One morning you'll swear its dead only to find it's onlt the exoskeleton. The now soft bodied crayfish will be hiding especially well.

Know which crayfish you are purchasing though as some get rather large, far too big for a 5 gallon tank. Some crab species would be nice and stay small, but most are at least brackish.

Dainty or Pygmy cories would go great in there. You could also probably get away with a few Pandas. Have you looked into some of the smaller loaches instead of catfish? Just a suggestion. Most Crays will get far to large for that tank, and be unsuited for cohabitation with the catfish. The ones that stay smaller and won't harm the cats are also quite expensive. You could also get some of the smaller algea eating shrimp, Cherries, Bumblebee, Crystal reds, snowballs, etc. Most don't even get to 1"

Cohabitat?? I was thinking just one cray and nothing else.

I might just go with some white clouds.......the shrimp are too expensive right now they are over priced. Upside down cat is way too big for a 5.5

guppys, endlers, or white clouds.....
