I know this sounds like a traitor, but go to a larger chain fish store if you have one and look at the ingredients on each type of pellet food you see for cichlids. Try to find one that doesn't have fishmeal as the first ingredient. These are your better quality fish foods. Once you have found a quality fish food, see if you can buy it at your lfs, and if not, purchase it where you saw it, and ask your lfs to start stocking it. I use and really like the Omega One as a staple for all my fish. They make cichlid pellets in 3 different sizes as well as flakes, bloodworms, tubifex worms, brine shrimp, and shrimp treats. The colors of my fish are fantastic, and they love the taste. New life spectrum is also supposed to be a better quality fish food, but I am not sure if they make cichlid pellets. They probably do. Those are the first 2 that are your better quality fish foods. I'm sure there are others out there. Just look at the ingredients and watch for the fishmeal. Omega One does not have fishmeal as an ingredient period.
New Life Spectrum makes all sort sof sizes of fish food, all seem to have the same basic ingredients. The first item is krill.
When I changed from flake to NLS, I found that I could feed a lot less food, instead of 2 tablespons of flake I fed 1/4 teaspoon of NLS to a 105 gallon tank full of cichlids and they started to put on weight. It is a dense food, not much waste. The colors really brightened. My favorite food, I feed it to all my fish now.
