gravel to sand help...

i looked up playsand on the home depot website and it said that it was a concrete mix, or was i looking at the wrong kind of sand?
but how much does a 40 pound bag cost?
im guesing u need a pound of sand per gallon of water, or does that only apply to gravel?

nevermind i found it, lowes has a 50 pound bag for only $5...now thats what i call a bargain

A standard 40 gallon tank runs (I think) 48 inches long by 18 inches wide. Where we use about 3 inches of gravel, we only need 1 inch of sand. So.. here is a substrate calculator that will take care of the calculations for you.

Put in the dimensions.. the depth.. and what material you're using. It'll tell you for the dimensions I gave (which might fit your tank or it might not). For 3 inches of regular gravel, you need 135 pounds. For 1 inch of sand, you need 50 pounds.

it aks me what type of sand im using, do you know what type of sand playsand is?

For our purpose, sand is sand. The minor differences in grain size isn't an issue.

I haven't tried the Quickcrete sand....hmmmm....might be time for another experiment. Nah...but the price is right that's for sure. The pool filter sand I got was $14 as opposed to the playsand at Lowe's being $4.

How did the change go? I just changed mine from black gravel to black sand, although I'm pretty sure it might only qualify as very tiny gravel, because it isn't nearly as soft as play sand. But it was the best I could do in black. Did you find black play sand? Or did you go with white?

Thanks!
