Great LFS...

Took my first trip to The Fish Place in four years (N. Tonawanda, NY). I walked in the door and was greeted by the sight of five 15 in. peacock bass eyeing me hungrily lol. Saw so many great fish...Especially in the cichlid section. They even had a fat female P. polleni (which was the main reason I went there) but it wasn't for sale

Has anyone ever seen a 16 in. oscar?? I saw about five...Very nice...More large peacock bass in the back...My mom was looking kinda bored until she saw some huge grotesque calico orandas wallowing in a 55 gallon tank for $50. I can't believe she was actually thinking about taking some of those home lol. Also saw the most aggressive Queen triggerfish Ive ever seen. I could actually feel the fish's bites through the glass. They also had a fairly nice M. tigrinus about 16 in. long for $300, if any1's interested ;)

Also saw an empty multi-hundred gallon tank (estimating at 1-2 thousand gallons) in construction...There was a tangle of driftwood the size of a lawnmower sitting in there, with two more sitting outside the tank. I can only hope it's gonna be a S.A. biotope (it's going up later this month hehe).

You might be wondering what I went home with after visiting such a store...I almost went home with a nice Caquetaia "kraussi" (actually C. spectabilis, only 9.99 for a 5 in. fish) but I knew it was an impulse purchase and those usually lead to trouble hehe...Sigh... :( And those Acestrorynchus fasciatus and Ctenolucius hujeta would have been mauled by my GT, so they were out too lol. The Red Spiny Devil plecos were tempting, but the 24.99 could be put to better use for Christmas gifts so no pleco either :p I did pick up a dozen rosies to treat my GT and the latest copy of TFH tho lol. Was lookig for some New Life Spectrum, but no luck either. It was worth it though, definitely going back again in the future.

I was there about a month or so ago and they had some huge clown loaches (about 10"-12"). I've seen pics of them, but never in person. They were all hiding in the PVC tubing though.

I do like going there though. Its better than an aquarium (you know what I mean :) )

Cypherman, Just to let you know, they are Karussi because they were from my stock. I also had Spectabilis before and they are different. The 2000 gallon tank will hold large SA cichlids when ready. They just removed hundreds of small Africans from that tank a few weeks ago. They change the display about every 2 years. The most impressive one was with mostly all Discus. BTW if The Fish Place doesn't have it, it's probably not available. There are 320 retail display tanks on that floor and another 1000 downstairs in the wholesale department. For those of you wondering, it's just between Niagara Falls and Buffalo, NY.

Naw man, Im almost positive those are specs, unless krausii can get the light blue scales. There were only two, and they had no striping at all. But if they're ur fish, then you would know better than I would lol.

Too bad I missed the African display; I'm sure that was amazing as well. Wish I coulda seen the wholesale floor tho :p

I know exactly what you mean Bartley; it IS like goin to a public aquarium, only you can take home what you like :D

Cripes! wouldn'ya know! they open a great New York LFS... but it's New York State. And the wrong end of N'yawkstate to boot!

Might as well be in Ohio-- practically in Canada!-- to those of us for whom the Delaware Water Gap is the Gateway to the West!

Got my hopes up. Got my juices all flowing too...

Lol. So sorry to dissapoint. But doesn't NYC have more than its fair share of LFS stores?

....That's it? I'd expect more from such a big city. What about regular pet stores? Do they have a good fish selection? Markheim here has a great fish selection even though its not specialized.

Oh, I'm droolin'. There's nothing here much. I'm getting ready to raid Springfield, IL (my neck of the woods, but still quite a drive away).... It's a very sad thing to be a fish addict and not have any lfs in the neighborhood worthy of the name. All we've got is Petco, Superpet (filthy tanks but fixing that, I'm told), and PetSmart. Ugh. And, oh yes, there's a Walmart.
