Green barb losing color

My tiny green barb looks like his color is fading. He was real dark when I got him. Now he is like a pale green. They aren't dyed are they?

he may be healthy..they do change from light to dark green back and forth alot. its ok

I don't know a whole lot about barbs specifically, but fading colors can also be a sign of stress, poor water quality, illness, etc. What are your water conditions like (ph, amonia, nitrite,). Also, is he all by himself? They like to be in groups and the stress of not having enough friends could also be a cause.
