My tanks water is turning green everyday, i am near the end of the cycle and ive been changing water every day however the water still turns greenish, literally by the next day. I have also noticed something on the downspout of my filter. Some sort of greenish stuff, algae maybe. Could this be causing the green water and should i remove it, I dont want to lose beneficial bacteria. I dunno what to do.

Also I have considered using a product called Acurel F to clear the water however i dont want to kill any good bacteria...your thoughts?

The green stuff is probably algae that's attaching to the filter return. Pretty common, but it doesn't actually cause the green water. What are your test results? Planted tank? Cycling with fish? For algae to take over, typically it means you have lots of food in the water, and no competition from plants to use the food up.

Is this a fishy cycle? Are you running lights on the tank a lot?

Overfeeding and excess light can both cause algae to grow like mad. If you don't have live plants, lights really only need to be on while you're home to view the tank. Anything more is asking for algae.

I have no real plants in the water..and its a fishy cycle with a pleco and a shrimp...I have been giving my pleco algae tablets, should i reduce them?

Ammonia: 0
Nitrites : High but coming down steady

sounds like either the tank is in direct sunlight, getting too much sun..... or the lights are on in the take for too long during the day. I wouldn't add any kind of clear-all for the water, especially if there's a cycle processing. I wouldn't add it even after a cycle but everyone to each his own..... the point of the cycle is to wait it out until everything establishes and settles.

that is way too long. How big is the pleco, and how many wafers are you giving him daily? You might be best off cutting his food down as others have brought up and cutting the light max to 4 to 5 hours max.

You may want to try only giving him a 1/2 a tab a day and fishing out what isn't eaten after a while. We usually feed our "pleco cookies" about an hour before "lights out" and then check for anything to fish out in the morning, but I don't know if that's too long. We don't have algae problems, but then my tank is planted and hubby's got lots of algae-eaters. :)
