Ok, I have a 75gal with (among others) a Female (I think) Green terror and a Salvini (not sure).

The GT is about 3" and the Sal is about 2.5. Have had these guys for a cpl months now. After I got the salvini, the GT would chase it away during feeding time. A few days ago I noticed the salvini was digging a hole under a piece of drift wood. It also seemed to be swimming sideways in the 'cave' it built. Now, the salvini stays in the cave and the GT 'guards' it right outside. Havn't seen the the salvini come out to eat but the GT does.

Do I:

1> have some seriously screwed up fish?
or
2> Are they mating?

the GT has nice big fins, real deep coloring and red outlining its fins. The salvini is pretty brightly colored and I've noticed red specles on its belly.

Salvinis turn bright yellow when in breeding color....especially the females.

I am not sure if it is possible for GT and Salvini to successfully cross breed. One is a SA and the other is a CA cichlid.

My male GT is also behaving strangely by shaking his head in front of my female Nic. His sperm tube is also sticking out. The Nic did not respond much except by staying with and tolerating the GT with occasional flaring of her gills. I doublt they can produce any fertile eggs because they are genetically very different.

Yeah, so are they just doing this for fun? or what?

Also, not sure of the sexes.. how do you tell the diff for these fishies?

Can you get some pics? We might be able to sex them for you.

Umm, not really. :(

Sal just sits in the cave all day, comming out once in a while to say hi and eat some food. GT just swims around normally.

But the coloring on Sal is very bright with alot of reddish on it's belly. And the GT has long flowing fins and is nicely colored too. Assuming there are eggs, and fertalization doesnt work, how long will Sally(?) just sit there?

Sals are usually pretty shy. I have a female that pretty much hides all day and only comes out to eat. When I had a breeding pair of Sals, they were very active most of the time displaying to each other. You can see pics of her in my sig.
Yours sounds like a female to me.

The quickest way to tell the difference between a male salvini and a female is the spot on the females gill plate,or females have black on their dorsal fin, though males have been known to have them on them as well,no male can have both the black on the fin and the spot.where as a female can.:)
